After a couple of hours on the upper beat and a sandwich and cup of coffee while watching a couple of range tip butterflies feeding I decided on trying the lower Longtown beat. I’m glad I did.
There was another good hatch of fly at about 5.30. I lost a small fish and then managed to get into a bit underneath some trees for the best fish of the day.
There were a few mayflies in evidence.

Tried a small wet fly with no success. Didn't spot any fish rising. Access was good in some places, but challenging at times. Made for a pleasant few hours out.

Great beat with plenty of space to cast and good wading the only down is the barbed wire to fence off the river so take 30" of pipe insulation in your bag keeping it with you for other beats . very sunny day with blue sky , nice depth of water and just light colour . Well now the fishing 10am start no fly life to be seen so started with PTN two sizes 12/14 not a thing , then the same with GRHE 12/14 i hasten to add not at the same time i just fish a single fly. Just after lunch there was a nice hatch of olives but no rises at all tried a dry any way , I then went for an olive nymph the just before my ride turned up at 5pm got a nice 10" trout beautiful fish with the most fantastic pink to red spots ,

Fished for a couple of hours, water very coloured and no luck with either Dry or nymph. Flow surprisingly low after the previous few days of rain and much sediment on bed of river. Oh well, better luck next season.

This stretch is very overgrown and if the river had been higher then it would have been virtually unfishable! There were really only two areas worth fishing and those were the two larger pools mentioned on the description. The river was well coloured due to a little rain the night before and there was some encouraging surface activity. I fished with a dry dropper. On the first pool I caught a trout which was about 10inches on the dry (aggressive take) and a small grayling on the dropper. Activity stopped quite quickly as the water was almost completely still. On the second larger pool there was also some activity and hooked a much smaller trout on the dropper. Had a larger take but came off and then after about 15 casts the pool went quiet.
As with pretty much every river in the area - needs a good drop of rain!

Lovely small stream, low water made fishable areas limited. Got a bit lost navigating to the bottom of the beat.

Only out for a couple of hours, fished from the bottom of the beat up to the campsite. River a bit coloured, after yesterdays "rain". Desperately needs a good flush through. Lots of fry in the shallows, hopefully a good sign. Spooked a sawbill in Olchon Brook confluence. Only saw two rises, despite there being a few mayfly and damsels on the water. Nothing came up to a dry, did lose a fish on a nymph fished in one of the deeper pools.

Cloudy and colder than of late so surprised to see masses of May fly hatches. Fish preoccupied with spent May so quite tricky but managed a couple on a drowned Grey Wulff
