Salmon Catches

Salmon seen moving through Glanwye yesterday. Both rivers are back in spate and are carrying a large amount of Welsh farmer's soil away.

Aramstone : 18lb (approx) fish on a spinner for Laurence Birken today. Water still on the high side with around 2ft visability. A couple more fish also spotted.

After 9 days of high water, both rivers are now starting to drop back and with a drying weather forecast. The middle Usk and the high water catches on the upper Wye should be be worth a cast this weekend.

Both rivers have had bank high floods as rain fell on lying snow. There is more rain to come this week. When this drops off the fish will be well distributed and there is every chance the upper Wye will produce a fish or two.

Wyesham: 2 perfect springers this morning 16lb and 19lb. Caught above Monnow junction as it is coming laden with soil..

Wyesham: 15lber caught a fly at 10am this morning. We are up and running for 2023

Usk : Reports of around 20 salmon caught on the Usk in the last few weeks of the season, mostly from the lower beats.

Newbridge (Usk) : 4 takes in 3 hours for Stuart Macoustra yesterday. 1 stuck... an 18lb'der on a Rev. Mole (Fishing with the fly inventor!)

And with that the salmon season comes to an end on both rivers. We are still getting reports from beats but it is one that will be remembered for how low both rivers were for so long and the 2 extreme record breaking heatwaves. If it wasnt for the Elan release we would have dropped below 1976's water levels on the Wye. 

There were mortalities, probably more than we know about as previous studies have shown that when the rivers are so low for so long C.20% of the stock can be lost in the estuaries and inshore waters. On the Wye, despite last week's spate a considerable number of fish are still in the lower reaches and we still need another decent spate to shift them to their spawning grounds.

We don't get many reports from the Usk, but it appears to have had another disappointing season, possibly even worse than last year. 

Let's hope 2023 sees more water in the spring and summer and no extreme heat waves.
