River high and coloured

Fished from early against high and rising water. We left at lunchtime but not before Mick (fishing as our guest) took a 24lb cock from Vanstone.

1 Salmon

Very high water level. One salmon seen jumping. No takes.

8lb very coloured fish from the Pulpit on a Flamethrower Red and another smaller fish lost on the same fly and same location.

River approx 0.5m at Ross and clear. Generally cloudy with sunny breaks. Fished all beats during the course of the day, some twice, ably assisted by Mick the ghillie. Occasional fish showing on all beats all day. None landed but one good fish hooked at The Island which then gave an athletic leap and threw the fly (In Flames tube fished on fast sinking tip). Although I lost the fish, without Mick's help I would never have hooked it in the first place. It was in a small lie, exactly where Mick suggested I should aim for, that I would not have even noticed by myself. His help was invaluable, especially for a newcomer to the beat, as I was. 12lb Hen Salmon caught from The Island stretch on a Willie Gun tube fly on a floating SH with fast sink tip. Really chuffed as this was my second Wye salmon in my first season of salmon fishing and my first on the fly.
