Fished from 9.30 am until 8pm in four sessions on a gloriously sunny day. Fish were leaping on Vanstone all day - four in the morning and I lost count of how many I saw breaching after lunch - 12 or 15? At exactly 6pm I saw a huge salmon leap out of the water and it was so close I could see it was very coloured. It must have been 4 feet long!

Sadly, none of the fish took a lure or a fly - not even a bite! But the prospects for the next few days look fantastic.

Not expecting to catch, the salmon (8lb fresh run springer) came in the stones, head of the pool. Cast at a fish which had just jumped. Yellow flying C. Sea trout was even less expected but a perfect condition 4lb sea trout, also flying C, my first sea trout. Mick, the ghillie, was very professional and helpful.

Lovely fly water, but Algal disaster on both days.Enjoyed getting to know the beat and Mick the ghillie was great company and knows where the fish are.If you are fishing Goodrich for the first time you would be foolhardy to do so without Mick.Thank you and until the next time. Damian Dwerryhouse

Did not fish. After speaking with Mick the keeper/ghillie about current conditions (primarily the algal bloom) we decided against driving a collective 600+ miles. Will be back when conditions improve!!

Presumably, according to the powers that be at least, the algal bloom is 'a naturally occurring event'?

I expect my nil return was inevitable due to the excessive algal bloom, but then a nil return can happen in perfect conditions. At least this gave me an excuse for not catching! An enjoyable day nonetheless, on a well managed beat.
