A lovely walk in the Usk valley on a crisp autumnal day. B caught and returned a 2lb+ brown Trout first cast, downhill from there on until we reached the old farm where we caught 3 more Trout and I made brief contact with a bright looking 5-6lb fish, whether it was a Salmon or Sewin I was not sure. An enjoyable day with Dippers, Kingfishers and a single Red Breasted Merganser for company.

Cold bright day ... one on a nymph klink and dink and one on a sedge

One cracking fish, small hatch of iron blue duns.

Afternoon session that produced 6 trout to 16" either on deep nymphs and later dries

Cold morning session that produced three lovely fish at 14" and two at 18" in the faster deeper water. All taken on a cased cassis imitation fished deep.

Trout were rising in Farm Pool but not taking the fly.

River very clear, downstream wind a bit chilly. 5 caught, 4 on a nymph below a bushy sedge and 1 took the sedge.

Couldn't seem to get any takes even though we tried all likely spots.

Rained most of the day, river low. We were using mostly pheasant tail or hare's ear nymphs. I caught 1 brown about 1 1/2 lbs. there were a lot of smaller fish topping but could' entice them with any fly on the surface afterwards we thought they might have been taking emergers as there were a lot of olive hatches. We do need to gain more river fishing experience as it was very hard work.

My first time ever on the Usk. Fabulous river, lots of different pools and runs to fish. Some fish taken on dry sedge patterns and some on tungsten nymphs below an indicator. Absolutely lovely river. One fish of about 2 pounds will live long in the memory.
