River fairly low. Nothing rising in upper section though the odd sulphur May, olive and mayfly hatching. Nymphs brought a steady series of plucks and hooked (and lost or landed) fish to just under the pound. All returned. Delightful warm early summer's day with plenty of birdlife...dippers, kingfisher, sand martins, blackcaps and a mother goosander with 10 chicks! Found rising fish on far bank of lower section in afternoon and tempted a few on mayfly. As I left (far too early) an otter crossed the river. Magical!

Hot, bright sunshine so not ideal conditions. Very little fly life and only a few fish rising. Had to leave before prime time. Lovely stretch of water. Note the white gate in the guide notes does not exist and access is very overgrown.

Some sporadic rises throughout the day but nothing prolonged. A beautiful stretch of water. One take on a submerged yellow mayfly dun! Well worth a second visit when the conditions are a little different.

Relatively clear water and an overcast day gave for an excellent time fishing. Concentrating mainly on the upper part of the beat, five nice trout up to 1 1/2 pounds.

There are definitely more interesting, better value and prettier beats for trout in the WUF scheme so I probably wouldn't return. The much vaunted walkway is in my view a decaying eyesore which does nothing for the Usk. Nothing much rising so nymphs accounted for two decent fish, both from the glide rather than the streamy water.

Strength of steamy trouting water around the island was too tricky to wade, but would be very attractive at somewhat lower levels. While there, between 1 and 4pm there was surprisingly little fly life. However a salmon had a snatch at my fly, and remained tantalising active. Lovely sunny, gently breezy day. (Note that the "white gate"is no more, so newcomers need to look for the short steep path with steps that can be found in the hedge just beyond Glan y Cafn house)

Somewhat ambitious fishing today. The river was brown and the current too fast for wading. Fished all styles from 10.30 to 5pm with only one bite at 11am. Plenty of fly life but no fish seen except for a salmon which showed itself briefly. Disappointing as the Beat looked promising in good conditions.

Had a great first ever day on the Usk. Water seemed low and despite some hatches there was little in the way of any rises throughout the day. Fished a tungsten bead hares ear nymph for most of the day and had short periods of multiple bites and then long periods of no action. Should have landed more fish with the chances I had but caught a fish of 18" (around 2lbs) so was happy with the new UK PB WBT, stunning looking fish as well. Fish was safely returned along with all others caught. Will definitely be back later in the year.
