We love the Upper Wye when the grayling are in season….. but perhaps a bit early for them, they hadnt really settled to feeding. Not much insect life around either but a few fish rising all day to keep us interested. Have been broken on this beat before in the Ash Tree pool so decided to uprate from 2.5 to 3lb tippet – thank goodness. My parachute greenwells was rather damp dragging across the tail of the pool when it was hammered by a good fish who rapidly headed off towards the trees on the far bank. Was able to turn him but it still took 10 minutes before he came to hand, 22 inches of Wye beauty, my best ever. A great start….
Down at the bottom pool by the caravan there are always fish rising – we managed a few grayling including 2 fish of 16 inches and probably a better one which came off just underneath the bench half way down the beat. A canoe and a kayak came up the river but turned around when they saw us…..
Then it was back to Ash Tree for the evening ….. where some fish started rising in the middle of the pool right on the tail of the run in. Thought they were small grayling but the first time I got the fly on the right drift a 14” trout took at. Gave the pool a rest for 10 mins and the fish were rising again in exactly the same place – must be small grayling! But no – this time it was a 20 inch trout. Two absolute crackers in the same day……
Then a whiskery face appeared at the bottom of the pool having already done for the fishing lower down with James. He worked his way up the far bank – he was a dog otter - until he was opposite me and then decided this was the perfect place for ottery play for 10 minutes while I stood still and watched him. A wonderful end to a good day with 9 trout and 4 grayling between us.

River was a bit low. A little disappointed I didn't find more trout but perhaps that's part of the attraction!
All caught on euro nymph setup
