Day 1 of 2 on a new beat for me, and what a lovely place it is! Well kept and the campsite manager is a really nice guy. Grayling to 16" and trout to 12" most fish on nymphs but had a few on small dries.

When we arrived we found that the owner was guiding a party of salmon anglers, so we spent most of the day on the lower part of the beat. Fish were rising in short bursts of about 5 minutes, followed by a lull of up to 30 minutes. Most of our fish were caught on small dries, size 20 midge or griffith Gnats, but also caught on gold bead nymphs between hatches. The fish were a good average size of about 12-13 inches but no lunkers caught, although we did manage to break our leaders on 2 good fish, either due to incompetence or faulty leaders.
We met up with the owner later in the day who apologised for the fact that we had to share the fishing with his party. He then showed us all the best lies for grayling and even gave us a couple of his favorite patters to try. This was very much appreciated and I hope that we will be back to fish this fabulous beat many times in the future.

First time fishing for grayling so needed plenty of help and advice this came in the form of the beat owner a keen fisherman Shaun, the early start was in vain as mist didn't lift until 11.30 but it did give us time to walk to the bottom of the beat and what a beat it is, plenty of seats and styles and Well trimmed banks what a beautiful place. Temp had dropped since Friday and Sun only broke through now and again, I fished dry and duo Shaun fished duo and nymphs caught fish between us until cold wind picked up about 3.30 mainly on the dry ,elk hair emerger klinks and f fly 7 x15 inch 2x18 and a stonking fish of 21 inches all of 3lb a pb for me but then It was my first time, talk about setting the bar high!!

Weather misty till 11 'then the sun pushed though for the start of a glorious day. It was little Dan's first day fishing a river, a slow start but he was shaping up well by the end of the day. He made his customary offerings to the tree gods with half his fly box but we have all been there. Paul Suter was demonstrating the finer points of tenkara to Anthony Wood who was seriously thinking of chopping in is sage rods after only one hour. Getting back to business, the go to flies for the day were nymphs - holy grail light colour only copper headed hairs ear size 16 elk hair emerger and size 18 klinkhammer in smutty white. Looking forward to the next Sportfish training day.
