First time on this beat for a few years, I'd forgotten how much fun it was. Managed to hook and land ten fish, but missed many more takes.

Lovely day with the 6ft rod.

A bright, hot day with an east wind, but I had hoped that the previous evening’s thunderstorms would have freshened up the river & the fish. There was a small lift in water height with a slight tinge. Despite covering most of the lower half of the beat, prospecting with dries & nymphs in the absence of any rising fish, there was not a hint of a take all afternoon & evening. I did, though, enjoy a beautiful Spring day in a serene setting, with kingfishers & sandmartins going about their business.

Not a breath, bright sun, little water. Not a thing until the evening rise. Got into some good fish but lost them all. Lovely stretch. Much enjoyed.

Area:Irfon & Ithon

Beat:Aberbwtran

Fishing:Trout (River)

No. of Anglers:1

Fished Aberbwtran as I consider it best as a low water beat (I find that many of the pools are unreachable in high water). A few heavy showers and thunderstorms. I was eventually rewarded with a nice 13" brown trout in the top set of pools.

In contrast to beats I’ve fished on the Wye, the Upper Usk teems with insect life. Different farming practices in the two valleys?
Two trout hooked in faster flows on perdigon, both played and lost.
A nod to the farmer / WUF for creating safer access to the river upstream of quarry pool with a new stile.
Thanks also to GCG Angling club member (they have access to the opposite bank) for tips on fishing the Cwmwysg beat.
