A pleasant day out on the river although not an easy one.
One Grayling on a heavy nymph, and a couple of missed takes. There was a brief hatch of Pale Waterys and the Grayling did come up, sadly we didn't get the bonus of a fish on a dry fly in December.

River had dropped considerably since our last visit a few weeks earlier, and was gin clear. My guru fishing partner caught one nice grayling around a pound and a half but it was tough going with no signs of any fish around whatsoever (apart from one leap from quite a large salmon in the shallows which caught us by surprise). Lovely day out on this great stretch of the upper Wye, thanks very much!

Conditions perfect for this time of year, but fish hard to find. Good sized OBT taken within the first few cast to heavy nymph. No other fish taken until early afternoon then a hatch of BWO happened and I had 4 Grayling to the dry.

Absolutely stunning surroundings, lovely stretch of water, but the fish didn't cooperate. We shall return. Note for the beat details - parking at the caravan site is not 'on a raised grass area' , but in a designated area next to the wooden building by the entrance gate leading to the river.

Very nice day out under a blue sky surrounded by autumn colours. Unfortunately the River was just a touch too high and coloured after the previous weeks heavy rain but it was still nice to have a splash around. A few grayling rises but only one trout around a pound landed. Thanks WUF.

Rain all morning, rising water levels by lunchtime. No fish caught but did see an otter not bothered by my presence.
Lovely beat and I will return to try again.

River low and clear. Air temperature rising to 15C+ from early morning temperature of 6C. Sunny with some cloud, after early morning mist. Water temp. 10C. Light hatch of olives and other insect life between 1pm and 3.30pm resulted in a sporadic rise of grayling and trout. Three grayling between 1lb and 1lb 4oz, 2 on dries and one on nymph. 5 OOS trout on dries and nymphs, the heaviest 2lb 8oz. All fish returned.

Difficult day. No fish moving. Water low and clear. Wading treacherous due to rocks being very slippery. Best fish 2lb grayling on emerger plus 2 out of season trout on nymphs.

9 x grayling, all 14-16 inches, 5 x trout 6-16 inches. A dark day without a breath of wind, mist on the hills and rain coming on during the afternoon. Water low and the pools very slow. A few willow flies about and some sedges later. To my surprise, the dry fly rod proved to be redundant on this occasion - I couldn't take a trick with it. Almost nothing rising through the day. What did work was very slowly retrieving a team of three traditional wet flies just under the leaves moving downstream on the surface after casting well across. Both trout and grayling then attacked one or other of the flies with surprising violence. Favoured patterns were Grayling Steel Blue and Foster's Yellow Bumble, both tied wet with hen hackles. The 16 inch trout, which was lurking under a tree, took the Bumble on middle dropper and made a nice finish to the trout season. A good day, even though my waders are leaking again.
