We fished this beat as part of a weekend trip, the weather wasn't particularly kind to us. The beat is a mixture of glides, riffles and pools - some of which are extremely deep. A cold start to the day saw no rises and proceeded with nymph. At lunch we noticed a few olives coming off and the fish responded in the faster water. 2 fish caught both to jingler dry fly.

Weather and water still unseasonably warm, so brown trout still feeding voraciously. Unintentionally caught 2, both released. Despite fishing deep on the bottom (losing many flies in the process) no grayling caught.

What an amazing days fishing on the Dolgau beat on the Wye, me and my friend Shaun fished as guests of the owner who kindly let us on this beautiful part of the Wye, as we were fishing we were lucky enough to see 8 salmon jumping throughout the day and truly spectacular thing when they leap out just a few yards away. This is an amazing river to fish with really good fish stocks and amazing scenery. I had a grayling knocking on 2lbs, a lovely fish caught on a CDC red tag variant fished under a klinkhammer with about 1 1/2 meters between them. I can truly recommend this location if you want to catch nice grayling. I believe the owner rents out accommodation if you fancied making a few days of it.

First visit on upper Wye, hard to find the place where the grayling are posted. Fly fishing with dry flies (not the best) and nymph. Wind at the end of the morning.

5 x trout 10-14 inches, 9 x grayling 6-16 inches, 3 on a dry Grayling Steel Blue and the rest with nymphs on French leader. A sunny day and clear water on a beat I am not particularly familiar with. I would describe most of it as "young man's wading." The main problem is there is not much gravel here; the bottom is either bedrock or piles of loose boulders of various sizes. It all looks very fishy, but the going is difficult. Some superb looking salmon pools might well be good in the last days of the season.

Day 4 of the tour with James Bullock and Sandy Geyer. Back up the river - the beat info says wading is tough, it aint kidding! We had two swimmers....
But being well up river again the big grayling were back to the fore - most of them were over 14" with the best going 18...and don't they fight! All on dry, required a few changes to find the preferred pattern.
Heavens opened at 3 - stuck it out for an hour and took a trout in the downpour... but by 4 enough was enough and we called it a day.
We have had 107 fish over 4 days (including Syfydrin)- a fantastic few days. The quality of the grayling, particularly in this beat and Doldowlod, has to be seen to be believed. Thanks to all in the office for their help in sorting out the fishing on this wonderful river. Phil

Fishing small dry flies. Few fish showing. All fish from Upper bridge pool. River low and running clear. The beat has been neglected since I last fished it. In particular the galvanised walkways are in a dangerous state... there are sections where the vegetation has grown through the mesh on elevated segments which obscure the margins and make falling off a real possibility.

I decided to fish Dolgau as the Rhayader gauge was low at 4", in the hope that bits that weren't accessible when I was last here over two years ago, might have been a bit more user friendly! Well there was certainly less pace but, even at this level, the beat is a brute to wade, and not for the faint-hearted. But even at 4" there was plenty of fishable water. Wading stick ESSENTIAL! A lovely day with little wind, warm and a bit overcast, should have been ideal and I guess it pretty well was. Midges, a few small olives and then sedges from late morning, were the Bill of Fare but relatively few fish rose. All fish were caught on a hare's ear emerger and Grayling Steel Blue. Most fish caught, but not all, were non-risers and were taken virtually from the off, and continued to tempted up until I left at about 5 p.m. Most grayling were 10-12" with a few 13-14" fish as well. No trout exceeded 10". This beat is seriously hard work though, and progress is necessarily slow and very careful. But rewarding for sure. I reckoned I deserved a beer when I got home!!
