After nothing produced in the first swim I moved along the bank a bit, this proved much more productive with 5 chub and 2 barbel, mostly using luncheon meat ... sitting in the river fishing in shallows, as the previous day it was hard fishing but worthwhile .. there was a few canoes this day but I didn’t find them a problem they were al courteous and friendly, it’s standard on the wye

Float.

Canoeists every 3-7 minutes - so fishing pretty much pointless.

You should reference this on tour website - I wouldn't have booked if I had known.

Afternoon session. Spent an hour walking and exploring some swims without fishing. Constant rain from mid afternoon until 7ish . 2 chub caught in the evening after the rain had stopped.

Water temperature had cooled after heavy rain on days prior to fishing. Fished both the wooded area - close to car park - and half way down the meadow all to no avail. Nothing showing to either legered or float fished baits of all kinds. Anglers on bank opposite did not catch either. Pestered by young ducks diving for our baits in the wood area. Bottom there is covered with filamentous green-brown algae/weed which makes fishing bottom baits awkward at times. Will not bother again until there is a lot more water on, hopefully later in the year.

Had a lovely afternoon on this beat, despite the downpours. Good selection of swims and good amount of fish. Forgot my float rod which was a shame as the Guy the other side of the river was having what seem’d like a red letter day. Got snagged up a few times today, angler error, still learning. The track down was fine in a car, however getting back up after the downpours was tricky, ended up having to reverse up the track for better traction. Luckily I didn’t get stuck. Advise 4x4 when wet, will remember for next time.

One barbel, approximately 5lb or 6lb, caught on pellet fished with a gripper lead. Caught at about 11am. However, the sheer number of canoes then, became so overwhelming that I curtailed the session. I must have watched around 100 paddlers in groups of around 10 passing by every five minutes or so. Many of them seemed to pay no heed to other river users and I had to regularly alert them to my lines or had to wind in.
I gave up and left at around 1.15pm. Pity.

This was my first visit to Thomas Wood. Its a beautiful beat with a mix of fast runs and deeper slower sections. As always with the Wye, the wildlife is abundant. Access down to the river is excellent allowing you to park at one of 2 parking areas very near to the river. Fished from 3pm. Slow afternoon with only a few annoying bites from small Chub. Tried a variety of baits and methods in 3 different swims. Finally a proper bite at dusk resulting in a hard fighting Wye barbel of 6.25lb's caught at the lower end of the wood. The bait was a 12mm pellet.
