Seriously tough fishing thanks to a hard and seriously cold easterly wind blowing upstream. Oh and the fact that I seemed to startle a few fishing cormorants whilst working my way upstream. Not surprisingly there were no hatches and certainly nothing really in the way of surface activity. Using nymphs I worked pretty much the entire beat but to no avail. Then, with only a few casts left before it got too dark to fish I spotted the smallest of rises from under the railway bridge. Assuming it to be a small trout and out of sheer desperation I switched to a small dry and had a go. After many ignored attempts i must have fooled the fish into thinking a small hatch was taking place as I eventually had a take. To my surprise it wasn't a small trout but a lovely 16 inch oos grayling which was gently unhooked and quickly returned. Shame there were no trout but still a nice way to end such a demanding day. Cheers as always WUF for your advice.

Weather sunny with slight breeze, water running fast and clear (and cold). No fly life about and nothing rising. One small Grayling and one salmon parr caught.
Footprints along the beat made it look as though its been recently fished but there have been no returns posted since Nov 13. Also what appear to be otter prints can be seen by railway bridge.

Surprised at how low the river was. One 15" grayling and two out-of-season trout at 16" and 18", all from the gutters with weighted nymphs.

Blank I am afraid. I couldn't locate the elusive grayling, which must be lurking somewhere - just 1 x 15 inch out of season trout on a Yellow Bumble. Irfon very clear and at a good fishing height.
A thought prompted by a couple of reports read recently. The ground is very wet at the moment and very easily damaged. Even if you have a 4WD, farmers might appreciate it if you don't drive across fields to the bank as you might in summer or autumn, at least until the ground dries. Essential trips to feed stock is causing enough mess.
