As I usually head to CLG for the first time in September each year, this was my first trip of 2015. The upstream wind probably didn't help today but there were a few olives and midge about and, in the wind, lots of falling leaves which usually adds terrestrials to the Bill of Fare. So where were the sipping grayling? The only rises I saw were clearly not grayling but trout, of which I caught eight ranging from 7 - 13" on a HE emerger, dark olive emerger and Grayling Steel Blue. Two grayling of 13 and 14" were non-risers but moved to the GSB. One showed evidence of FEB injury. Had nothing on nymphs. Maybe today was just one of those days when the ladies weren't having it but, being surprised at such a poor result with the grayling on what should have been a much better day, I had a look at this summer/autumn's fish returns compared with last year and the year before, and the proportion and numbers of grayling caught do appear to be down (ignoring the "maggot" season"!). Having caught a significant number of grayling in similar conditions, and with the same patterns, during the last week on the upper and middle Wye, might predation have been an issue during the last year at CLG? I hope not, as this has been a fabulous fishery for many years. Just a thought!

More of a recce for future winter grayling. Right bank downstream from the church difficult to access from bank. Water clear but peaty and dropping. Fished for a couple of hours upstream and caught 1 trout 9 inches on nymph. Lovely spot.

River still quite coloured but fishable. Caught 4 small trout ( biggest 12 inches ) and a nice grayling, all on nymph except the largest of the trout caught on a small dry adams. Thank's for a great days fishing on a lovely stretch of water,

Nice couple of hours fishing, water still a bit coloured from heavy showers earlier in the week. All fish caught to the dry fly, not easy, had to search out rising fish but if you could find them they were on.

Lovely beat as I expected but water chocolate brown and hammering through. 1 small trout on weighted nymph in streamy water and all in all very difficult wading and fishing.

2 x trout to 1.5 pounds, 7 x grayling to 0.75 pounds. River pretty low, strong showers through the day, and a general shortage of surface activity. OB's contribution was managing to miss three nice grayling risen to the dry fly. Meanwhile CB caught the rest on nymphs.

An enjoyable day in many ways in a very nice, interesting beat. The larger trout was about a pound and in excellent condition, taken on a Grey Duster. I had a quite a number of missed rises in the shaded area near the pond. The fish seemed to turn away at the last moment.

Several trout seen rising but very cautious. Showed interest in small grey duster but never connected. One grayling caught on dry fly.

Great days fishing the river had tinge of colour the fish took dry and nymphs readily. Good luck getting the huge oak out of the river it's about mid beat it's not been there long so felt I should report it. Already looking forward to my return visit in the winter.
