Sometimes it falls sweetly into place and the madness of a four hour, 190 mile round trip can be explained. I made a full day of it, fishing early and late. The Arrow was clear and on the low side. Netted four fish of 8”-10” before 11.00am. Three to a PTN, one to a grey Klinkhammer.
After 5.00pm the sport was excellent. Tempted, missed, lost and caught fish feeding just below the surface. These Kington Trout don’t give you a second chance. Two stunning fish of 12” and one of 8” came to a size 16 Parachute Adams.
Delighted to meet and talk with Simon from WUF in the morning and again in the evening along with members of Kington Fishing Club. Thank you to everyone who works to maintain my favorite stretch of water.

Beautiful stretch of water - very technical wading and quite tricky to fish - stealth being everything! Fish rising to dry flies and also taken on wets/spiders.

Dry fly, small Mayfly. Water just over the top of thigh waders. Kept 2 fish at 12 inches and put the other back, it was only 10 inches.

This is a wonderful beat, full of fish and with a healthy fly population. Aided by the hottest day so far this year (21C) it was easy to target rising fish. I put 15 on the return but honestly I lost count and also lost as many as I caught. I used a size 14 CDC olive and would have gone smaller but I didn't have any (note to self). I saw some Mayflies but they were sporadic and I didn't see a fish take one. The middle section is difficult to fish and I am still to fish the top section which looks quite overgrown. There are 2 fallen trees in the bottom section which I don't remember from last year but manoeuvring around these was a small price to pay.

Good conditions, overcast and relatively warm. No trout seen at all, very cold water, assuming too early in the season. Some lovely little pools and glides though, so will be back later in the season. May/June?

The river was in excellent condition, running full and clean. I took my first fish of the season off the top of the pool behind the weir on a Klinkhammer. Had another in similar circumstances later in the morning on the upper half of the beat. Four other trout came to a weighted Hare's Ear, all 7-12". After lunch it became breezy so I gave up and pottered home more than satisfied.
