Sorry for the late report. Had good day out with JT, we both got soaked in the steady afternoon drizzle and had a pleasant chat with the owner. JT caught and released 4 very nice wbt all in the 12oz range. I took a heavy tumble on very slippery bedrock and little in the way of fishing but did catch and release a wbt of about 10oz. Saw Goosander and single chick both of which clattered across the surface of two of the lower pools before disappearing. All in all a good day.

5 Trout

I was wary of booking this beat from the start due to a very unproductive visit once before but I wanted to show my fishing partner the various beats WUF have to offer on the Usk during our weeks trip. Well we didn't catch any thing, I spooked what seemed a good fish past the falls but that was it. The beat was booked partly with some wild stream fishing included, I'd warned my mate that at this time of year it will be difficult with full cover, I wasn't wrong and we gave it up as a bad idea after fifty yards and being eaten alive !
Nil fish

It was one of those days where nothing seems to go right. I kept tripping and falling, my lines kept tangling when I approached a fish. Enough of me moaning. Good beat, river not too big not too small. Few rises. Hooked a nice brownie on a blue dun size 14 fly, and boy was it big but I lost it. I think I was over exicted and tried to net it too quickly but then the fish bent my hook and swam away. Nice 10" brownie caught and safely returned on a black PTN. That was it although there were quite a few rises but just not my day.

1 Trout

3 Brown to half pound and one very nice brown to about 1 1/2 pound not brought to hand. Taken on Size 14 black pennel.

A beautiful reach, abundant fly life particularly in the afternoon as the river fell from the chocolate brown spate of the previous day. 1 trout caught and safely returned around half pound on a mayfly dry fly, but missed several other takes. Mink showed itself below the bridge.

Two fish caught and returned. Lost another two larger fish. Taken on dry fly and also spider pattern. Quite cold at times.

2 Trout

Fish from 6 inches to almost 2lb, mainly on size 16 tungsten grhe. Fish rising in a couple of places but very hard to tempt on dry flies. Griffiths gnat size 18 managed to do the trick. Beautiful beat

7 Trout

Cold easterly wind meant that the trout were very quiet. All 3 of us spent several hours exploring this beat and none of us saw any trout rise or even saw any movement in the water at all.

Very low, very clear, and cold wind. A pretty and unspoiled beat though.

4 Trout

No fish caught on very cold morning. Not a good session. By twelve o'clock had packed up. I'll put that one down to experience and look forward to better sessions to come.
