This was our first day of the year on WUF waters and decided to fish the upper Usk as we thought that it would be less affected by recent showers. The river was in fine condition, clear with a good flow. Things were looking good from the off when JT netted a fine 1 3/4lb trout to a heavy nymph on the 2nd cast! However, a red letter day it was not to be, no further fish with just one turning away from SCs nymph on the return pull and one rise to another nymph on the Crai. A hard day as we both felt out of condition , particularly as we had to put a lot of effort in for little reward. However, as always a good day out on an excellent beat in wonderful countryside - we'll be back!

Water crystal clear so stealth was essential. A beautiful place to spend the day. Care and studded soles needed to deal with the steep sloping banks towards the bottom of the beat and many moss covered boulders. I spotted one fish rising on the far side of the gravel run near the very bottom end of the beat. After quickly tying on a DHE a WBT of about 2 lbs took on the third cast. I did take a look at the Crai which is almost inaccessible. A short rod of under 8' would be ideal. Several close encounters with RAF Tornado's at sub 200' screaming overhead!

A lovely stretch of water. I never saw or touched a fish, perhaps the water is still to cold. Really enjoyable beat to fish.

Lovely Spring day with water level good and water very clear. There were a few flies coming off, mainly LDOs but no fish showed any interest. I walked the full beat but saw no rising fish. Despite a blank, I had a most lovely day in delightful Welsh countryside and warm spring sun. There are now a lot of fallen trees in the river, but probably of benefit to the fish, if not the fisherman. Perhaps they should be left as shelter for salmon and trout parr?

Frosty, clear shallow water, Merganser's on first 3 pools, leaves a constant pain and thats just some of the excuses we're using for a dismal attempt at fishing for Salmon. On the plus side a beautiful day in the Usk valley, clean crisp air and stunning scenery with the bonus of catching and releasing 5 stunning trout up to 2lb. One day we'll fish this stretch when it is on song and doesn't clash with B's shifts. We'll try again when the stars are in our favour.

River conditions perfect above & below the bridge. Some rises to natural fly, & few takes to wet (size 14 partridge & claret spider ribbed with copper tinsel) & dry (size 12 ginger hackled hare's fur) flies, but none caught.

Very tough days fishing on what is a really nice beat. Only hooked two trout all day on beaded nymph. One of which was around the two pound mark which I failed to get to the net. The other a trout of around ten inches. I fished three different methods nymph ,dry and downstream wets all day until 7 o'clock and had not a sniff all day apart from the two takes. All in all it was a lovely day and will be definitely fish this stretch again. I did lose a pair of forceps somewhere on the stretch and would love to hear from anyone who finds them. Message me tim.marks@sandingservices.com. Thanks.

We came, we saw, we mucked about. Lovely day out with my fishing mate, we blanked but it was hardly surprising as there was very low water, bright sunshine and 2 clumsy chumps. Just great to be in such stunning surroundings. We will be back later in the season when there is more water, less sunshine, more leaves in the river and less stumbling over the rocks.

Lovely day out in stunning surroundings, too early in the seaon but a useful recce. JT caught 3 lovely wbt, I caught 2. All trout safely returned. There were very noticable signs of an otter above the bridge, it is advisable to look carefully before sitting down to change flies.
