Fished in the woods for the first couple of hours, plenty of chub as usual, made a move back up to the top field in search of barbel and never had a sniff. Most of the chub were small, under a pound. First day on the Wye this year and it definitely looks out of sorts, murky water and no streamer weed.

There is a reason Dean Macey favours the Wye for his Fishing Guru’s TV programme’s. It’s the same reason many of us travel long distances to cast a line in its calling waters. The river lived up to expectations, with ten Barbel to 8Ib 4oz and nine Chub to 4Ib 8oz. The Barbel fell to pellet, with all bar one to my mate Trev, which was no doubt, due to his “superior water craft” ????. The weather god was also smiling on us as the downpours affecting Herefordshire didn’t find their way to banks at Fownhope. I know the Wye and Usk Federation and all other invested associations are doing their utmost to address the issues affecting this majestic and prolific river. I am sure I speak for committed anglers everywhere in wishing you speedy success, as losing the best river course fishing to be had anywhere in the UK would be a sad day indeed.
