We don’t usually come this far up the catchment this early in the year but as it has been an early spring we made an exception. We wondered how we were going to avoid the out of season grayling that were prolific at Gromain the previous week – but we need not have worried!
There were a few flies coming off all day – Yellow May Duns and Blue Winged Olives – but only a few fish rose, and none in the usual prolific bottom pool. We didn’t cross over to fish the upper part of the beat today, but still managed to get 5 trout up to 14” to our dry flies. All safely returned….

I was hoping for more water coming from the Elan but that was not the case yet, the river is on it’s bones.I started catching Grayling using a Spanish leader so stopped and started prospecting with the dry.
The biggest Trout was a very fat 17” which put a tremendous fight. That fish alone made the day worthwhile.

Didn't rain here overnight but somehow the river had come up over a foot !. The visability was not too bad so I decided to give it a go. Couldn't get to any of the better spots but still managed to fluke out a grayling of 12". Bit of an issue parking, the owner has put up a sign now telling you where to park and has then left 2 cars in it! . I sqeezed in next to them but I was half across the driveway. The rest of yard was just full of all Manor of stuff!

River was about 2ft on the Erwood Gauge and 1'6" on the Rhayader gauge. It was a still a bit high, but crystal clear and very fishable above Newbridge. It was an eventful day. Several salmon jumping around, an otter worked the far bank, red kites and buzzards circling in the skies, and two large groups of canoes made their way downstream. Fishing between about 11 and 2.30pm, I managed a three grayling between 11" and 13" and one 11" trout, all on nymphs. Blustery, cold at times, and the rain came on in the afternoon. Saw a few olives, but not enough to get the fish rising. Good day. Glad I took the chance.
