The beat has been reduced in length removing the lower pool which I was planning on fishing in the evening. The expected hot weather swimmers took the bridge pools and several more swimmers wandering down the beat looking for their own pools were asked to return to the top pools. Fish were caught on tight line nymphs in the pocket water ranging between 10” - 17”. I would only fish here in cooler / wetter weather.

When I arrived the river was low and clear with little sign of life, add to this an annoying down stream breeze and bright sunshine and I didn't fancy my chances. Didn't have a touch for the first hour, and was beginning to think I was wasting my time. There was hardly enough flow to move the nymphs, which kept getting stuck on the bottom.
Finally I got to some faster water and lost a good fish, due to thinking the fly was snagged, and didn't lift properly. A second run down resulted in a cracking 14" trout. The rest of the fish were all around 10-12", and all except one were taken on a black nymph, the last on a clinkhammer. Lost a further two and missed a couple of takes too.
Turned out to be a good day after all.

Howling wind, low water, and bright sunshine made for a really tough day.

Arrived to find a very low river but good cloud cover and plenty of hatches in evidence.
I started on dry fly and took a nice fish (2lb) from Parsons Pool, where rising fish were in evidence but tricky to tempt.
John, my friend fished upstream nymphs and took 3 heavy brownies (2.5, 2 and 1.5lbs). It was nice to be able to access parts of the stretch not normally wadeable but this was balanced by the challenge of presenting a fly correctly in such skinny water. As the day progressed the wind increased until blowing a gale downstream and the sun came out making fishing almost impossible.
We had a mystery to solve as there was a group of people in gloves and masks underneath the arch of the aqueduct, they looked to be busy bagging things and generally industrious (no impact on the fishing I hasten to add). It turns out they were surveying the local bat population and they remarked that that there was a healthy colony present some 50 -60.
All fish were returned and we had a great day despite the increasing challenging conditions.

This is an interesting beat, only fished the top half but plenty of interest. Opposite the hut (Parsons pool) had fish rising when I arrived, could not see what they were taking so put on a March Brown and waded in…. Not easy wading in this pool but did manage to land a small trout. A more experience person of someone comfortable with deep wading would, I suspect, have had many more!
Just down from canal bridge had another couple, one on a weighted nymph which was quite small and another later in the day on Klink in the faster water which was a very decent fish.
All in all a lovely beat and once we get some rain should perform well, great day out.

Another warm Spring day with sun and cloud. Breeze stronger today and variable although mostly up and across river. Fished 11.30 to 16.00 but action faded after 15.00 . No hatch to speak of but once again searching likely seams with an Olive Comparadun produced the goods. Hooked 8 and netted 5, failing to connect with several more slashing takes. These were superb condition fish up to about 2.75 lbs. Another wonderful day on the river.
