First time I’ve fished this beat so I worked my way down the R/H bank from upper to lower limits. I didn’t see any salmon, although I had one strong pull in Aubreys which stripped line quickly off my reel so that might have been one. It was challenging wading at times, and the trees made for a difficult Spey cast off my right shoulder. I shared the beat with five coarse anglers from the Birch Grove club so had to pick my way around them. I suspect some were in the salmon pools but this was the first time they’ve been allowed to fish this year so I wasn’t going to begrudge them. I’ll probably avoid a Sunday next time though, and will bring the spinning rod rather than the 14’ double hander.

A few firsts for me today

Firstly; my first time on this beat. A real Jekyll & Hyde of a beat too; with some delightful and accessible water at the lower end (and, by Wye standards, easy wading), followed by some brooding and inaccessible water up river. I only fished from the lower access point up to the Rapids; where there was plenty to keep me occupied from my early start until I had it away at 2:00 pm to listen to the England game on the car radio as I drove home (which I had got into my head was not kicking off until 8:00 pm when I made the booking). I walked up as far as The Orchard. I concur with the beat notes; anything above Llangoed Pool is Salmon water

Secondly, my fist ever Shad. After a fruitless half hour casting a dry to rising fish, I switched to a nymph, and caught a 12" Grayling with my first cast. Another couple of casts and I was into a Shad. It must have gone all of 3lbs; when it flashed in mid-water, I thought I was about to break the Grayling record. In spite of diligently moving away from them, I caught Shad after Shad for the next couple of hours (the 10 "Other" were all Shad). This sequence was broken by a Chub of 3lb plus (which, again, had me thinking I was about to break the Grayling record). A few more Grayling before catching my first legitimate species of the day - a rising Trout, that took a Light Cahill with alacrity. More of the same next cast; which makes me wonder about the rising fish that I failed to catch earlier in the day

Thirdly, the first time for a long, long time that I have caught four different species in a day's fly fishing; the four almost becoming five when a Salmon took a substantial poke at an Endrick Spider just before I packed up

Glorious sunshine throughout. Tres bonne
