Quiet day (great weather) until 5pm and then 8 fish in an hour. First day of trout fishing with my son on the Wye. Would have loved to stay later as the rise was starting. Covered a small area of the upper beat, will return to work out what we missed.

Grayling caught on Adams and PTNs. Brown on Adams.

No fish caught. River level quite low.

Mostly small, but one trout and one grayling about a pound. All on dry and dropper rig.

1 fish lost at the Chapel. Other than that nil. Water now very low

Nothing caught, not even a nibble

No catch, few nibbles with 10 second wrestle but aside from that, nothing going

First time I’ve fished this beat so I worked my way down the R/H bank from upper to lower limits. I didn’t see any salmon, although I had one strong pull in Aubreys which stripped line quickly off my reel so that might have been one. It was challenging wading at times, and the trees made for a difficult Spey cast off my right shoulder. I shared the beat with five coarse anglers from the Birch Grove club so had to pick my way around them. I suspect some were in the salmon pools but this was the first time they’ve been allowed to fish this year so I wasn’t going to begrudge them. I’ll probably avoid a Sunday next time though, and will bring the spinning rod rather than the 14’ double hander.
