Slight tinge to the water which remains very low. Around midday a small stream on the boundary ran in very dirty and put a 30 meter wide band of chocolate down the right hand bank. Didn't see any rises but had 2 on nymphs. VERY slippery. I had felts and a wading stick and nearly went a few times! There's a covering of brown algae on the bedrock which is lethal. Lovely water and the broom, violets and bluebells are all out in bloom. I love the Upper Wye. Walked right down to the very bottom and worked back up, fished 1100hrs 'til 1530. The stained water made the wading even more tricky as you couldn't see the bottom, so called an early bath! Beautiful place and worth another visit.

6 x trout 10-14 inches, Hair Wing Sedge and Griffiths Gnat. Plus far too many out of season grayling, from parr up to 14 inches. A few hours with the dry fly rod on the way to W Wales. The river was exceptionally low, just 3 inches at Llanstephan gauge, and the sun very bright. I don't know about wellies, but you could certainly ford the Wye in thigh waders at quite a few points. Nothing moving in the pools, which were stagnant with clumps of detached algae drifting, but it was possible to find rising fish in the fast water. This kind of low water day is never wasted though, because it's an invaluable way to explore the details of the river bed.

fly fished for a few hours but mostly took advantage of the low water to walk the banks and find the good and the bad wading

Nice to fish this at near on summer levels, was able to wade the upper streamy water with no problems. french nymphed for a couple of hours and picked the bulk of fish up to beadheads then I moved down to the bottom of the beat as not seen it before and there was a steady rise of large fish but sadly most were in the feeding lanes on the far bank. Note for another time!! i netted 4 on dry all well over twelve inches . the rise only lasted 30 minutes and then the river died. One trout lost early nudging 2lb. an enjoyable day , sadly the grayling were far more active than the trout.

A tough day which was bright and with a cold downstream wind. There were some occasional rises to the sparse grannom hatches but otherwise, little surface activity. I fished the bottom section up to Llangoed rapids with both dries and nymph, which has some very attractive water for a trout fishermen. It is also probably the easiest wading I've experienced on the upper Wye over the flat bedrock. Looking forward to returning in more favourable conditions.
