Had a lovely day on this beat. Does get some bad press but we really like it and caught some decent fish in tricky conditions.

Good days fishing, we had finally had some rain so the levels were better but still low, all fish came to feeder tactics. As for the access the beat has still not had any maintenance so without waders we would not have been able to access the bottom of the beat. Not for the faint hearted as access is poor but definitely worth the effort if your up for the challenge.

Water still very low despite a week of rain. Very few fish in evidence in the top section, although it looked great dry fly water in the lower conditions. However I didn't get a sniff there on either dries or wets in several hours fishing, which was odd as there were a few small mayfly coming off and the grey wagtails and dragonflies were zipping after them. Also had a bad slip on the algae-covered rocks which badly sprained my left thumb on the rocks, although I did at least save the nice bamboo rod in my other hand! I switched to the deeper pools then, wasn't fishing that well really with one hand but did pick up a couple of fish on dries before calling it a day. Strangely the first was not a trout but a dace - first I have caught on the WUF beats. The trout seem to be hanging out in the deep water - probably unsurprising having been very exposed elsewhere to predators, and also higher temperatures during the heat wave? Tough fishing but still enjoyable in a lovely wild beat, praying now for a lot more rain!
