No salmon X2 trout caught . This section of the Wye is very quiet and peaceful. However at the bottom of the beat kids and adults have decided to treat it like a beach resort on the opposite side of the river . I'm all up for sharing our water but when your paying 40 pounds to fish for a fish that is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack and is spooked easily I didn't find it very impressive when the one pool that would potentially hold a fish, was having stones thrown in and people creating loads of noise. I feel if you are charging this amount you need to stop people from going down there and having a gathering. I enjoyed the peace at the top end of the beat but I think I will leave this section of the Wye now untill end of August September.

Message from the owner : Thanks for your feedback. The area you refer to is just beyond Ty Newydd beat so beyond our control; it is technically a canoe access point only (for use out of season or at high water levels) and there is WUF approved signage to that effect: sadly not everyone reads or choses to understand it though. Usually people will respect a request not to enter/disturb the water if the situation is explained and you can get within earshot.

3 trout and 1 out of season grayling all caught on spiders mainly orange and partridge. Seam from the main riffle by the fishing hut proved productive.

A bright blustery day . Water level and clarity perfect for the fly . Unfortunately no salmon
Some lovely pools . Shame about the planks on the bottom beat where the floods have moved the concrete. Making this difficult to fish the two pools . A beautiful section of the upper Wye .

Weather forecast kept changing so we deferred a decision until the last possible moment. We got as far as Rita’s bacon butty van outside Crickhowell where it was raining before deciding to press on regardless as this was likely to be our last outing this year.

Proved a good decision – the rain stopped as we pulled in to the car parking area and the day culminated in a glorious autumn afternoon. Got in to the river just above the bottom salmon boards and second cast my fly disappeared in to a gentle rise which turned out to be a lovely 17” trout – out of season but still in very good nick. Thought that might auger well but there wasn’t much activity … however any fish that did rise seemed more than willing to come to an artificial. We finished with 6 grayling to 15” and 3 OOS trout, and said farewell to the Wye for another season.

We have had a good year, 18 days on the rivers. Thanks to all involved for facilitating some very special fishing. Back next year, heres hoping the river is less stressed with low levels.
