Fierce downstream wind made french nymphing a nightmare so a switch to Czech nymphing it was to be. nothing happening at all till about 2 pm when I saw several grayling move up to a feeding lane in one of the pools and amazingly olives started drifting by within minutes. there were a few splashy rises but the better fish were holding mid water so opted for duo nymphs with a 2mm jig on dropper and 1.5mm on point. All took 1.5mm point on size 18 jig hook. Size between 12-16 inches . I have never fished here before and I can only say it is stunning in every way. A few large salmon were showing one of which was 20lb+

Ty-Newydd at its most picturesque on this mild, autumnal day. Heavy nymphing between Gravelly Pool and Bachawy brook resulted in steady catches throughout the middle part of the day. Mostly small and medium sized fish but with one out of season Trout topping a pound. At one point, fishing a team of three nymphs MT had two fish on the same cast. Not that unusual except on this occasion a ‘mixed brace’ one a Grayling and the other a Trout - there should be a name for that!

A couple of Salmon provided an acrobatic side show. The (temporary) gate arrangement near Bathing Pool is something of a ‘death trap’.

Great to be back on this beat and only fished the morning. Started by the Lower Planks but found the fish up in the faster water of Bachawy Pool. It was slow to start with but by 12 o#clock they were rising well, all fish taken on size 16 brown Klinkhammer. Brown seems to be in favour this year and the normally productive Grayling Steel Blues stayed in the box! I would just echo OB's comment in his report that grayling seem to come in cycles and the fish seem to be smaller this year, most of them around the 10" mark. I have every faith that they will soon grow to be the specimens that we come to expect on this glorious river.

Warm for late October but the rising fish were not as abundant as hoped although a few were evident either side of lunchtime. Some success with olive patterns during a sparse hatch but most came to the nymph with the french leader leading the way. Grayling pink nymphs were not as successful as drab beaded nymphs in the very clear water. Best fish was 17" (measured with a tape) with many in the 12" to 15" range as well.

Despite a forecast of heavy rain in the morning, bright sunshine turned up. Plenty of fish caught in the bottom end of the beat, but as per our last visit, the average size was akin to a sardine.

Very good conditions on the day, and lovely autumnal setting to fish in. The three of us that went are more used to still waters and could have done with a bit more river knowledge. We still came away having caught 4 grayling (mostly small) and a decent 1.5 lb brownie (returned). All in all a good experience that warrants another try.

MB (North Shields) and TP (Suffolk) had our traditional October day at Ty Newydd. TP fished Nymphs in predominately faster water and had a really good day catching 12 Grayling and 5 oos Brown Trout. The best of the Grayling were around 11/2lb. MB spent most of the day fishing dry fly. Very few fish were rising but rose a few to the dry fly. Had 8 Grayling between 8 & 11" from two runs plus 1 oos Brown Trout on the dry. Also had a small Grayling late on to a small gold head. In hindsight should have spent the last couple of hours fishing spiders and/or nymphs as had a few takes in last 20 mins or so fishing this style. This year nymphs beat the dry fly!!

Wow! What a day! My (Karen's) first salmon after four long years of trying. A slightly coloured hen that Dave estimated to be 11 - 12lbs. I didn't know they could fight that hard! It was hooked in Armies Pool on a size 10 fly tied by Dave that was a based on a Tail Fire Shrimp. She was released in the water by Dave and she went away strongly. The river seemed steady from yesterday with the water at around a foot on the gauge.
Throughout the day we were tempted away from salmon fishing by some rising grayling and we had one each on dry flies weighing around 1lb each.
After thinking that salmon were mythical creatures that didn't really exist I am well and truly hooked and will be back next week for more!
