A beautiful day on Holme Lacy 3 with the river in good condition and the beat immaculate thanks to Colin's hard work. The only thing missing were salmon; no fish seen and none caught! Colin's theory is that the spring fish went through on the high waters of March and April and the back up fish have not yet arrived. Disappointing in fishing terms but a great day out in a wonderful location.

Unfortunately today was not a good day either. Water still cold and still very high, plus the Beat seemed to lack any sign of life at all. Even the Canadian Geese were sitting on the bank looking at us as though we were mad. We concentrated our efforts at the downstream end where the water was a lot slower, but to no avail. However, we will be back to pay this Beat another visit.

WOW! 4th time fishing and first river fishing. Accompanied by my experienced tutor and cheery companion we walked our kit down a beautifully maintained access to the most beautiful part of the River Wye. A few seconds in and a Kingfisher welcomed our arrival. After being shown the techniques of river fishing I got stuck in, who said fishing was boring! After using a double boilie the rod jerked and I was squealing. My tutor calmed me and slowly and carefully I brought in a beautiful Barbel about 3.5lbs (now named Barney!) so exciting just couldn't believe it. Having read some tips and listening to Dean Macey on TV recently took some Pepperami cut into small chunks, after attaching 2 chunks cast out 3/4 away across river, within 30 seconds another bite... another Barbel. Whilst thinking I couldn't have had a more perfect day it was my tutors' turn to catch a Barbel, then a quiet spell. But... luck was still with me and I caught a Chub. What a day and for a first on the river I want to go again. Just wicked. Thanks Holme Lacey 3 for a memorable day and a great first river experience.
