The river was still a few feet up from Friday's rain, but dropping slowly. R H and I chose the best looking area given the conditions - a relatively smooth flow through the inside of a bend. I caught 8 barbel and R H finished the day with 5. Our biggest went 8:09.
I did wander around a few swims with the chub gear, but didn't get a bite. Maybe the chub don't like the dirty water? Or maybe they were hiding where I wasn't fishing.
The other member of our party fished Lower Carrots and Luggsmouth and despite fishing a perfect-looking swim, blanked.

River was 2 foot up but managed several barbel, best of 9 pounds and a few chub. My wife had a dozen chub and 1 barbel. A special day for my 60th birthday. Superb fishery, terrific ghillie - Colin. Will be back soon

It was a frosty start at first light and we flushed a hare walking downstream towards the island. With the river running fast and coloured we initially tried an early start at the hotspot below the island. General ineptitude with such fast water meant we soon moved upstream. Eventually we settled on the first two swims near the hut. Using the ubiquitous pellet and maggot we accounted for 10 Barbel, 3 Chub and several fine, specimen Dace. More were potentially available but the lunchtime cider took it's toll on our reactions. Despite the wonderful scenery and wildlife, J.H. once again couldn't keep his head out of yet another dreary 'potboiler'. Another very enjoyable day on the Wye. Thanks to the lady who takes the phone bookings.

Our 1st session on Holme Lacy. The beat has good access and with the river being at summer level, there are lots of swims that are comfortable to fish from. I spoke to Colin the bailiff during the week previous to our visit and he was very helpful. We ignored the popular swims at the bottom of the beat and fished the swims over the 1st style.
We finished with 12 Barbel between the 2 rods, to a best of 9lb 4oz, along with dozens of chub and dace (even on the pellet). Thanks again to the Foundation for a superb fishery.

Weather changeable from bright sunshine to showers, lots
of surface weed and debris being washed down and snagging my line, 4 decent chub on hali pellets from the far bank opp. the island but no Barbel, moved upstream and fished
from one of the croys had a good size barbel on which promptly broke my 10lb line! Decided to call it a day. Quite a bit of traffic noise from the B4224 but a nice place to fish never the less. Wye & Usk staff always helpful when booking.

First visit to this beat. Caught 5 barbel to 7lb plus and 6 chub to 4lb plus. Stuck in one swim for the barbel, but went walkabout for an hour with the lighter rod and caught 3 chub and missed 3 from different swims. Good fun.
Nice varied beat, which seemed to me to have more likely swims than some of the other WUF beats. Another good day on the Wye.
