The chub apocalypse continues. Some barbel are still there and in good condition, but getting bait down to them through the insane chub shoals is very difficult. The path down to the bottom island swims is pretty treacherous now so exercise great caution, especially if carrying a lot of gear.

This is a conservative chub estimate, as we lost count quite early on in the day. There really are a lot of chub in this beat now, with the better ones to be found in the bottom swims. The barbel are a different story - still very hard to track down, but in great condition when you come across them.

The plan was for England to lift the European cup, then catch 200 chub while basking in the glory…. Best laid plans and all that! Spain and the weather had different ideas, however the morning was dry so we pitched on the bend which seems full of big chub and a surprise barbel, popped back in the evening and fished by the hut for more big chub until more rain closed in, shame as it’s a stunning beat, don’t book if your nervous of cattle.

Two rods fished. River was at a good level but coloured and flow increased in the afternoon. Total of 46 chub caught but no barbel. successful baits used were bread pellets and luncheon meat.

Short session in the breaks between the rain. Barbel not playing despite perfect conditions - usual banker spots appear devoid of fish now.

Barbel very localised and hard to isolate from the thousands of chub throughout the whole beat. Advanced chub avoidance techniques highly recommended...

Chub bonanza 'part 2'..!
Moved around the beat hunting for barbel with more patient tactics than day 1 however no success.

Basically more chub, all nice fish and once again, in certain swims, it was like shelling peas. Overall count on a day, that started at around 8.00am through to about 3.00pm, was around 60 fish topping out at around 4lbs.

Overall the beat was in really good order, the river was well coloured at a good level with great access to the swims it's just the Barbel that were missing from a great two day fishing break.

Chub bonanza as usual.
All caught on float fished corn, luncheon meat and various krill and halibut drilled baits. Exactly the same on feeder. Catching fish from first cast at around 5.30am through to last cast at around 3.30pm.
Average size of the chub was around 2.5lbs with best fish around 4.5lbs but didn't take time to weigh any of them. Overall catch numbers was estimated at well over 100 on the two rods. That works out at around 12 fish per hour which is a low estimate, it was extraordinary and, dare I say, became almost boring.
Unfortunately no barbel and these were our primary target.
