Fished the section downstream of Cronkley bridge.
4’C air temp and 11’C water temp in the morning.

As expected the river was low and clear, but based on water temperatures I decided to travel. Fished the lower end of the beat where there was a bit of fast flowing water - the deep stretches looked almost stagnant. 3 Chub before lunch and a lone Barbel of around 7lb at about 4pm. I’ve never seen the river so low, but great swim cutting on the beat gave lots of choice.

We managed four trout and two grayling between us, and we had to work pretty hard for them. All but one were caught on dry emerger patterns and one on an olive nymph. Not to be 'that guy', but I also hooked and lost something very substantial right at the top of the beat in the head of 'Wall Pool' which nearly ripped the rod out of my hand and stripped 20 yards of line off my reel before throwing the hook. I'm not sure if it was a very large brownie or possibly a grilse if they're that far up the system despite the lack of rain?

With regard to the beat itself, whilst this is a beautiful stretch of the upper Wye, the river is fairly difficult to access for the most part, and the wading is incredibly difficult even in low water due to bedrock and large, slippery boulders throughout the riverbed. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're very confident on your feet.

We had a nice chat with one of the owners Rachel and they're working hard to improve access to the river.

A very enjoyable afternoon at Caradoc, River very low but found a few Chub feeding in the faster water. nice stretch, we will return when the river levels rise again.

11 Other

Fish were willing to take a elk hair emerger in the faster water at the neck of pools. Wading was predictably awful given the low water and slippery rocks.

3 Rainbows on legered worm. All undersized so all went back in.

No fish see or caught. Banks were a bit over grown but not that bad
