A chilly NW breeze for most of the day but a brief respite around 1pm and there was a hatch of MBs.
All fish caught in dry fly and returned, best fish 1.5lb.

A similar story to yesterday, save that I managed to catch a feisty 14”er on nymph during the morning. The hatch when it finally started was no more than a trickle and failed to bring fish to the surface, save for two which I discovered in quieter water above the confluence. The first I rose but only pricked. The second was caught after a change of fly and was much chunkier than the rise form suggested, a beautifully marked 15”er. I share the views of other anglers about the restricted access to this beat. The use of barbed wire is both excessive and unsafe. Otherwise, another lovely day courtesy of the WUF.

2’1 on the gauge today with a nice tinge of colour. It was quite difficult casting heavy tungsten tips with the strong downstream breeze, but I wanted to fish the top catches, which I haven’t fished for a while, so spent the morning on both sets of boards on the Gromain and Radnor banks, covering Bachawy. The inevitable happened late morning and I had an unplanned swim. So I’m going to fail my audition as a trapeze artiste.
Early afternoon I had a solid take to the flyingC that I switched to in the Spring Pool but after a bout of head shaking it didn’t stick to the crushed barb hook. A probable salmon but after hooking a 6lb + Chub on a salmon fly a couple of days ago, and initially thinking it was a kelt, I couldn’t be sure.
The effects of my earlier dip set in by 4.30 and I was glad to get to a warm car.
A pleasant day nonetheless.

A bright day with cool downstream breeze could not dampen the enthusiasm of being out to play at last after the longest close season in living memory. River was a perfect colour. The electronic Natural Resources Wales gauge was indicating 1.10 m although the robust physical one at the foot of the steps was indicating just under 1.0 m on arrival which appeared a more accurate representation for those of us familiar with the beat. This 10 cm discrepancy could put people off on what was an eminently fishable day and wadeable with care. Close season bank work on Upper Rock has improved accessibility and it was possible for us to wade from the top of the beat almost to the Chine on lovely fly water. At this height there is also a good flow below the bridge by the pub and just upstream of the cables. Felt I was going to get a take with every cast.. Intermittent hatch of Grannom from 12 till 2 and just 1 or 2 LDO’s could not tempt even trout to show. Still a lovely day in great company.

Wind had dropped somewhat from previous day but was still strong enough to make casting upstream quite difficult. I think overnight rain had also made river colder (or at least seemed so when wading!). All fish caught on nymphs using both duo and French Leader. We saw one large trout taking occasional olives and although tempted by the fly, it came off quite quickly.
