This was my first visit to the Monnow and to fishing in Wales. Time permitted me only to fish for a few hours in the afternoon. The river was low and I saw no other anglers. There was no hatch and so nothing taking on the surface. All fish were caught on nymph out of two pools with a decent depth. The best fish was 12 inches. All were in good condition. A most enjoyable session.
I stayed at the Bell at Skenfrith and would have welcomed the chance of being able to fish on the 25th as well.

No fish were caught, no rising trout at all but a sensational setting with stunning views. Water was quite low and gin clear. Quite challenging conditions (trees etc.) for a novice like me but absolutely loved the few hours away from it all.
A few lessons perhaps are required. . . does anybody know anyone local to Cheltenham that would give some tuition?

Water a little high, otherwise perfect conditions. Nice healthy fish and a selection of sizes between 6 and 12 inches. All caught on nymphs.

Blue sky all day and surprisingly warm by the afternoon. My first visit and the river didn't appear to be running out of the ordinary. Wind was blowing from the east and down the river.
There was some fly action, but very little over the water, only saw one rise all day.
The only fish caught was caught on a nymph in the morning, a lovely brown trout of about 1.5lb in weight. I caught it on an LBJ (little brown jobbie).

Very bright and warm for time of year. River clear and reasonably low. Fished from 10am til 4pm. Very little movement seen all day, and only 1 Brownie to approx 1.5lb. Lovely fish taken on an LBJ. Wading easy, lots of wildlife, and a pint of fine cider at Bell before home to wife and kids.
Great day.

Slightly murky water but overall good fishing conditions and great weather. Fished 1200 - 1700, no surface activity, hooked one on a small beaded type nymph; felt a reasonable fish but not seen and managed to disengage itself pretty quick.

My third attempt at fly fishing...arrived to find the river looking ideal, a good flow and a tinge of colour. Travelled though fog and there was still a frost on the fields, but the sun was shining.
Feel like I fished quite well, saw a few March Browns leaving the surface and even did a reasonable job of "matching the hatch" but by lunchtime I was fishless.
After lunch I walked back to a place I fancied in the morning and to my delight saw fish taking flies off the surface in a slack behind a fallen tree. My novice like casting let me down however and I was unable to present a fly to them and my attempts probably spooked the fish as I didn't see anymore activity.
I lovely spring day on a great stretch of river but I'm still to catch on the fly...maybe next time.
