River really low, when I booked I was hoping for higher water but it never happened, seen some big fish at the top of the pool above the bridge, think they were barbel, there was a few there in the faster water. Didn't see any salmon

Fished 9am to 1pm on the 3 bits of faster water towards the bottom of the beat. Lots of missed take or fish shaken off but landed 10 brown trout from 6” to 12” and a couple of Grayling. Most fish taking a tungsten caddis, and a few on a pink tag.

This was the last of a 4 day trip to the Usk and Wye so I knew already how low the river was. So I opted to at least try the pools that MIGHT hold a fish in such low water - the Mill and Rectory neck. Started at 8am but I saw and felt nothing. It was dis-spiriting to be honest. By 10.30 I was off home. I'm rethinking the tactic of booking some days months in advance and hoping the river will be in good sorts. I think, for the salmon, I will hope to be able to take a short-notice day off work when conditions are right and head west for 24 hours. I did see from the bridge at Boughrood some extraordinary creatures below - which I later identified as Sea Lampreys. They were a good three feet long and frankly rather creepy but I gather they have been endangered and are now returning to our rivers which is a good thing, I guess...
