Beat:The Rectory Fishery

Fishing:Salmon

No. of Anglers:1

Fished from 7.30am to 9am. Due to height of water (11") I only bothered with the bottom half of the beat and the other rod had beaten me to it and was alreday working down the Rectory pool. Followed him down. First cast into the Mill stream the fly was snatched 11.5lb colouring hen which fought well and rifled away after briefly posing for photo. Tried the neck of rectory and the pool itself (missing a pull) but didn't fish any further as the other rod was now down in Glangwy and it was time to get to work. Saw a few as well, a big coloured salmon showed in the neck of the Rectory and 4 others in the Rectory Pool including a very silver 4-5lb grilse that showed in the fast run into the pool.

10.5lb colouring hen from half way down the Rectory pool (never previously caught a salmon here before) on a #10 BSS and 11lb+ coloured hen from 2nd half of Glangwy on a fast fished sunray. Also moved a fish to the sunray in Mill race and pulled a fish on the neck of the Rectory. An eventful 2 hrs fishing!

For the most part, it was a dead day on the beat. Next to no rising fish despite some flies hatching. I caught a few small fish but otherwise quite. However, for about 30 minutes, it was all happening.... I was standing in some fast water and several salmon were attempting to run and were leaping all around me. It was then I remembered why I love salmon fishing. It was so exciting! I didn't hook one, but it was fabulous to be there for that.

River high but clearer than on Friday. One tiny trout caught at gravel bend, another seen and a decent salmon - 8lbs or so - jumped.

Fished down twice on Rock pool, Mill stream, Rectory neck and Gravel catch . Lost something which initially felt like a rock on the lower Mill stream but which turned out to be a good fish. Unfortunately it 'pinged' off after 30 secs with a hefty splash in place of a two fingered gesture.
