Fished Wyesham for the first time. Allocated the Dukes Water in the morning. Beautiful fly water at 1' 10" on the gauge but didn't see any salmon. Fished through all of the pools Joe Cobley advised on. Good clear advice given over the phone by Joe and easily translated into landmarks when on the bank. Met up at the hut for lunch and then went out on Cottage Pool in the boat for the afternoon. The advice was to put the fly a yard into the slack behind the crease cause by the croy and let the fly "dig in" before it swung across the crease, over the submerged rocks, and into the main flow. A fish showed at the end of the crease on the 2nd submerged rock. 10 minutes later as I covered that rock I had a fairly a tentative take on a 1 inch willie gunn copper tube and, 10 minutes after that, a sea liced 10lb springer graced the net. Thanks Joe !

10lb salmon in morning from Cottage Pool and a larger one about 15lb from Colemans in the afternoon. Combination of big tides, cooler, more water and cloud cover seems to have encouraged some fish to move to the fly. Fished sink tip with a 2 inch brown, yellow and red plastic tube.

Hot at 7am start and got hotter. Any salmon had given up from the start and I gave up by 3pm. Fly fished the day so only benefit was plenty of casting practice with new line set up.

No fish seen but certainly conditions and fact that there were no canoes (surprising as Easter Sunday, must have been the rain forecast) made for a good day getting used to casting a fly on a far bigger river than I usually fish. Highlight was a session down the Cottage pool in boat with the ghillie Joe.

A slight rise overnight with about 3'6" on the Colemans gauge and coloured but fish able.
Lost a good fish well over 20lb on the fly after three long runs that took all the running line and over 20yds or more of backing. Headed back to the salt water through the viaduct so had to hold on a bit too tightly for my liking and ultimately performed long range involuntary release! Had one more pull next run down the pool!

The gauge at Colemans (Beat 3) showed 3'1" which is still a bit high for the fly. I stayed with the fly all day (2" weighted tube) and Gerry fished with a flying condom (yellow and red) with out any success. Fished Beat 2 in the morning. Tried spinning from the boat at Cottage Pool but the anchor couldn't hold as still too much flow. Saw one fish moving upstream at Colemans in the afternoon. The ghillie Ray Morris stayed with us all day and was very knowledgeable and helpful. Enjoyed a good lunch at The Hut on Beat 2. Hopefully we will return later in the season.
