A welcome and enjoyable day with fish coming throughout the beat despite the low water. Three trout to 10” on an Adam’s early on, the others to various wets and nymphs, all quickly retrieved and released. There were only six juveniles. Usk Nailers and Cased Caddis patterns were particularly successful.
The highlight of the day came late on in the bottom of the beat. Worryingly, I thought I was into a grilse that might have crept up, after a solid take, but it turned out to be a thumper of a Chub of 4 1/2lb maybe pushing 5lb, which took a Cased Caddis in pocket water.

Twelve fish caught and many more lost. Mostly small fish, but two good-sized trout. Mainly caught on nymphs and spiders. All fish were safely returned. Very little insect life and no fish were seen rising. A very enjoyable day on the river.

Four small fish on nymphs. Good to see a few more inches of water on the Llanstephan gauge but not much insect life around and just one rising trout spotted.

Spent the day guiding my nephew with a bit of fishing. All fish caught on assorted patterns, some to his own fly tying creations, 6-11” and all quickly released. At least the same number of fish on and off. Lovely day despite the river being on it’s bones still.

Again, not a great deal of fly life on the river to report. Plenty of lively salmon parr about..around ten of them getting to my nymph before trout and grayling had a chance. Fortunately all swam away strongly. The faster water produced half a dozen small trout.

Beautiful stretch of the Wye. Only fished right hand bank. Convenient path along most of the river. Enjoyable fishing despite gusty downstream wind and some road noise. Lost a few very large fish.

Nothing caught. Bright day with wind blowing downstream, quite strong at times, made casting difficult. No risers seen all day, insect activity started to increase about 19:30 when I needed to leave the site.

Even though there had been a rise in water level it was already on the way back down we really need a lot of rain in the catchment and a good wash through - Nothing caught or seen

2 shad.
Fish came to grhe goldhead fished in faster runs.
Compared with a fortnight ago not many insects about. E g saw one yellow may in 5 hours on the water. Only two or three rises seen in that time and hooked trout on one of them with a klink. On and off v quickly.
Not too good a botanist but think I saw a small strand of ranunculus growing in the shallows. Hope it was.
