I guided on Llangoed. 2 adult anglers. Fish rising in the lower section in the early morning, then hardly any activity. Very sparse fly life. Catch was 2 brown trout, one grayling, one shad (accidental by-catch). All returned. A large number of shad seen moving in the river.
Water temperature started at 64, rose to 66 by mid-day and 70 by late afternoon (Orchard Pool). This is an extraordinarily high temperature and I fear it is very stressful for trout and grayling. The one grayling caught came from deep water in the Orchard and took a long time to revive.

This was a second day on the same stretch of river. Stayed over night at the The Griffin Inn at Llysen. Very nice pub and good evening meal, also very good B&B. Started out by losing first 2 fish hooked. Went back to top part of the beat, this is much easer to fish. Things started to improve. 1 trout (brown) of 16 ounces taken, 4 grayling, one of at least 12 ounces, very hard fight.

To all at the Wye and Usk foundation, a very big thank you for all of your help. Had a great day fishing. The total caught was 6 grayling of six to eight ounces and 2 trout (brown) of eight to ten ounces. Also, very privileged to see a salmon of 15 to 20 pounds jump clear of the water, flanks looked very black.

3 x 1lb trout...caught and released. 1 x grayling...caught and released. All caught on small Klinkhammers and Olives. One human nearly killed by heart failure when Inlet/Outlet pipe triggered as clearance procedure whilst rod holder nearby. This happens every twenty minutes and might be worth noting for the unsuspecting. It can also lead to the short sighted claiming a 'rise' in the middle of the current... although I am not sure any rod would deal with the kind of beast that this would represent.

The workmen upgrading the waterworks are currently throwing a lot of food into the river to encourage the fish.. this appears to be helping somewhat as there was plenty of activity.

No success on upper beat. On arriving at the lower beat, a light hatch of Grannom was underway, although there were only a few very occasional rises to be seen. 1 fine trout (1lb) caught on Grannom at Llangoed pool. Further rises to Grannom 200 yds below the rapids, providing good sport. A rapid change to March Browns needed, as a strong hatch brought vigorous rises everywhere. Exciting fishing! 2 more trout of 1ib caught. Very light hatch of dark olives. 1 further 15 oz trout to a Kite's Imperial. A big trout was caught but lost as I hadn't spotted my hook had lost its tip - schoolboy error! A great afternoon's entertainment.
