My first trip to Bugeilyn and the previous return notes are definitely right about the need for a 4x4 to access the water and the need to be careful walking across the boggy ground adjacent to the lake. Started late morning and ended about 4.30pm on a bright day with increasing gusty wind, which definitely tested my limited casting skills and weight 5 rod. I lost a fish early on on a bibio and must have missed about ten sharp tugs from the feisty trout. Eventually landed a fish on a black buzzer. I met a gentleman from the club/syndicate who also fishes the water as I was leaving and he was generous with his advice. It is a stunning location and so I will return, hopefully with a bit more confidence after the advice, in the future.

It was a very hot day (24 degrees) and I fished for about three hours, between 1pm and 4pm. Fish were moving throughout the afternoon and feeding on the surface in the margins, although flies fished there I failed to tempt any. I changed to a weighted (red) nymph which did the trick. I had several plucks at it and two fish that actually connected. The fish are very distinctive in their markings. Worth the trip just to see them!

Very few takes on a very bright, sunny, windy day. Just 3 small trout taken on dry flies, track ok if using a 4x4 vehicle.

Very windy, all fish between 6 and 14 ozs. Difficult day, small black flies again. Kept to area in front of boathouse. No way you could get a car along the track 4x4 essential and then still pretty rough. Wonderful scenery.

Heavy rain all day. Fish caught on bushy fly on top dropper. All fish returned.
Beautiful place to fish - would be even better in decent weather!

Recent catch reports for this beautiful lake suggested I was either in for a feast or a famine: as things turned out it was somewhere in between. It's a long drive from where I live and I wasn't fishing until almost midday. Overcast skies and a cold southeasterly wind meant the first couple of hours were very quiet and I took only one small trout. As the day warmed and the wind dropped a bit there were a couple of flurries of activity, one in the early afternoon and another in the early evening. These helped me to take ten trout it total, the best of which was close to a pound and feeding only a couple of feet from the shore. I fished a team of wet flies with the Zulu and Green Peter taking most fish. When the fish were active I also had plenty of rises, swirls and missed takes which gave the impression the fish were not really feeding heavily. I have often encountered this behaviour fishing Irish loughs after periods of rain - the locals claimed it was because the rain had washed so much food into the lake that the fish were stuffed full. I find that a much more appealing explanation than straight forward incompetence!

Fished between traditional wet and dry, depending on weather (wind and light showers) and trout showing. 2 fish on grouse & claret and one on black gnat emerger.

Really bright sunny day. Very few fish moving, fished hard all day and had a few slashing rises but only one take, a small black finned trout. Beautiful location.
