Another lovely stretch of the Wye, hardly a soul seen all day and not too many canoes. 7 Barbel between 5lbs & 6lbs 8oz all caught on pellet/feeder tactics. The only downside was one of our party had their car broken in to in the fishery layby, future anglers bare this in mind!

A wet start after a night of persistent torrential rain. The river seemed to get progressively faster and more coloured throughout the day. The start of the beat is quite open so we walked up river to the field the other side of the metal bridge where more trees overhang. After no luck we moved to the 2 swims either side of the metal bridge over the inlet. 1 rod had 3 barbel - 6lbs 3ozs, 6lbs 6ozs and 7lbs 13oz from the swim virtually under the bridge at the mouth of the inlet. All fish were caught with Ellipse pellet haired and a feeder mix, avoiding main current. We didnt see a soul all day. This really is a beautiful spot.

Seven Barbel all between 7lb and 9lb. Needed large feeders to hold bottom with hemp and 3mm pellets. All fish on pellet. Sun came out and a very pleasant afternoon and evening. Cardiac Hill not as bad as I remembered. A beautiful venue, fished the first field and the Croy was three feet under water.

Arived to find river tearing through, looking like strong tea. We knew it was not going to be easy. Hard to hold bottom despite using 4 and 5lb leads. Took all day to catch a 5 lbs barbel.
Beautiful stretch -will be back when conditions more suitable.

Arrived to find the river roaring through and the colour of strong tea.We realised it was going to be tough to catch. Was using 4 and 5 ounce leads and could not always hold bottom. After trying different methods through the day we did manage to land a 5lb barbel, so all was not lost!
This is a beautiful quiet location-we will be back.

What a fantastic place! I think we were very lucky in that the river was in absolutely perfect condition with plenty of colour. We started off in a couple of swims in the middle of the beat at about 7am. The sun was already quite warm. Not having fished the Wye before we were unsure what to expect. Eventually we settled in a swim at the far end of the beat that seemed slightly deeper. Within half an hour we had the first barbel at around 3.5lbs. A lovely start. My friend caught this one and I was really pleased for him at it was his first barbel. He is more of a sea angler but it is getting the hang of this barbel fishing thing. He ended up with five other barbel up to around 5.5 lb, thoroughly beating the expert (me). He also had a nice conditioned chub. I ended up with 2 nice barbel slightly larger at around 6lb. We packed up around midday. The sun shone all day but it didnt put the fish off at all. It seemed that the more feed that went in the better it got. The landscape and surroundings are quite beautiful and we never saw a person all day. Our tactics were quite simple. We used 2lb test rods, 3oz feeders on 10lb mainline with 10lb hook lengths around two feet long. Bait was boilees and we filled the feeder with halibut crush ground bait and small halibut/feedstim pellets. We stayed in a farm cottage in a lovely quiet rural location at Felton, North of Hereford. The cottage was booked through Sykes cottages and is also thoroughly recommended. It took about half an hour to get to the river. We will be back.

After all the rain we had the week before leading up to today and the first time we had fished this beat, we weren't as upbeat as usual on our 100 plus miles visit. We got to the river and as we expected thundering through like an express train ,the bottom of the beat was compleatly unfishable so headed off up to the top of the beat. A lot more cover, trees in the river about 5 rod lenghts out, river up by 7 to 8 feet. We got in a couple of swims where the trees broke the flow and it was quite comfortable. We fished right up to the trees with feeder pellets combo, clutches set tight. What a day 10 barbel from 5lbs to 9lbs 15 ozs just short of the magic ten 2 chub to 3.5lbs, countless hook pulls and lost fish. It was constant from late morning until went home. If we had stayed i think we would have quite easily doubled our catch as they came on the feed again late on.
The upper part of this beat is lovely. Why its not fished much is beyond me with the river at normal level and all the trees along the bank. Its a cracker, on parr with a lot of the beats and we have fished most of them.
Roll on next time. Oh and about the steep path,im writing this report from our local A & E [not really]!
