First trip out on the river this season, underestimated the volume of water pushing through a little, nevertheless made the journey, no going back at least for a couple of hours….

Managed to creep in just above the bridge no more than knee deep far enough to get around a 20 meter cast away. Fourth cast down and around size 14 gold head PT nymph hooked a brown around 10 inches unfortunately slipped the hook a couple of feet from the net.
Eventually after 4 hours or so netted and released 2 further browns around 9>10 inches.
Headed home will be back when levels drop a little.

Bright sunny day. First time on the water so explored most of the beat, nothing rising. No fish but a great day out.

Arrived at the Usk today with high hopes having witnessed some good March brown hatches earlier in the month. But despite warm sunshine, no wind and perfect water heights, the river was quiet. I saw 3 MBs and a handful of LDOs in four hours but apart from some very early grannom, that was about it on the fly front. Still, prospecting with dries and nymph, I managed seven lovely trout, the biggest two at just under a pound and a half. The most successful fly was a klinkhammer in rougher water.

Hardly any fly life , despite a beautiful day … saw 5 fish rise once all day and managed to tempt 4 of them on a dark quill olive …. Several cormorants and mergansers on the beat
