Got our usual swims, and even moved from these after canoe time but not one bite between us. Warm and overcast, good flow, tried the baits that have worked well here for us in previous years, 220 mile round trip, but not a single bite....... will have to think twice about coming again.

This was a new beat for us, parking was good with options at the middle and top of the beat. River looked to hold a little colour but was a little low. Fished almost every area of the beat although the bottom end is almost inaccessible in most places. Tried the float but only Fish came to standard hair rigged pellet on lead or feeder from top meadow and a swin in the woods. Little country pub at the top of the hill up the lane is the place to go for lunch. We'll be back to try again very soon thanks to wye and usk for access to our favourite river.

Saw my first Egret! Good river conditions without the forecast rain but for some reason the fish were conspicuous by their absence. The same could not be said, unfortunately, for the deluge of muppets in canoes. Those in green Wye Valley Boats seemed to know the etiquette and passed on the far side but the rest did not and I spent much of the day trying to sink the lines below boats that were 10 yards in front of me. Twice I got completely taken out, one boat crashed into the bank under my rod tip, another had loud music blaring (Roy Orbison!) and some of the comments and conversations were unbelieveable - a mother explained to her teenage daughter that "we go to the 'end of the river' and then phone them to pick us up" - I glanced down from the Severn Bridge on my way home but there was no sign of them in the Bristol Channel. Note to self - essential kit for next trip to include a Hi-Viz onesey so I can be seen from more than 10 yards away, a loudhailer and a 12-bore for those that are both blind and deaf.

See you again after the summer holidays.

On a serious note, new anglers to the river might well be put off by a similar experience even though the canoes are only passing between 10.00 and 15.00. Tagging on the website those beats that see the most summer holiday traffic might be a good idea.

Productive few hours fishing the wooded section. Barbel to nearly 9lb, a chub and an eel falling to pellet fished on running lead rigs. Great beat, all fish in fantastic fighting fit condition. Back in the autumn.

Tough going...really really tough. Chub and eels far bank from wooded section. Not my favourite stretch and annoyed to see litter strewn down the woodland by the anglers parking areas.

Great day out and barbel fed most of the day. The river was still low after all the rain.

Conditions looked good but the only bite of the day was from a small barbel (less than 2lb) which was snatched by a pike before I could net it. Perhaps the presence of the Pike explains the lack of bites.
