A bit of a struggle under a blazing hot sun with a constant procession of canoeists, most of whom spent more time in the water than in their craft. Surprisingly two of the three fish caught came around midday. The evening seemed to hold promise but then only produced one fish.

Tough conditions for opening day, river low and clear, weather bright and sunny.
Fishing was slow but we managed two barbel of about 7lb and 8lb and four chub of about 3lb from one of our favourite wood swims. Fish were in great condition as always. Great beat, back in a couple of weeks.

I arrived about 9 am and fished the same swim as the day before. Conditions looked great but I had to wait for four hours for my first bite. Worth the wait though! An incredibly powerful fish was on which was eventually landed. It was a perfect, deep bodied barbel weighing in at 11 lbs 8 ozs. My biggest Wye barbel. That was followed by another barbel of 7 lbs 4 ozs. I lost a chub and then had a chub of 4 lbs 2 ozs. With about an hour to go the tip pulled round again and I was hanging on to what was obviously another big barbel. It was. 12 lbs 3 ozs! What a way to finish the season. At last knockings I hooked into yet another powerful fish which I eventually got close in but just as reached for the net the hooklink parted. It looked every bit another double which would have been incredible but I could hardly complain. All the fish were in perfect condition and now have three months rest from us anglers but I'll be back. Thanks to WUF and Don the bailiff.

Nice beat to finish the season on. River in good condition. Fished a couple of unfamiliar swims which whilst snaggy produced two nice fish to pellets and bait feeder. The other anglers did much better but my day was a bit too short.
Thanks WUF for another great season without a blank. Can't wait for June 16th!

Arrived in the morning with a few other anglers already there. Settled in the last meadow swim before the woods but had no action by lunchtime. I went for a wander downstream and fortunately bumped into Don the bailiff. He didn't rate the swim I was in and told me to try downstream. Excellent advice as it turned out from the man who knows the river best. I settled into a swim where I could fish a deep run just into the stronger flow and hold the bottom with a 5 ozs feeder. 20 minutes after moving I had my first barbel. An immaculate fish of 8 lbs 6 ozs which gave a great account of itself in the strong flow. I had to wait two hours for my next bite but pulled into a very powerful fish which went 9 lbs 15 ozs. Two chub about 2 lbs followed and a last gasp bite was a smaller barbel about 5 lbs. I was looking forward to my last day of the trip and the season.
