Lovely spring day for trout, water .56m and temp 16 deg C . Water temp not as cold as last week.
Decided on wood stream with a gold bead hares ear and hooked a large trout just off the groin again.
Led me quite a dance on 3lb line but managed to land it after 10 minutes. Fish just under 2lb and in excellent condition.

Saw one or two mayfly and yellow may dun and there was more activity on top than last week, mainly due to a better water temperature I imagine.
Had to leave at 3.30 having tried a few dry flies at the occasional rise with no success

A small trout first , then 3 casts later another take, a huge weight lifter of a salmon. Both caught on a Willy Gun Cone Head Snaelda on a floating line and 5’sink tip , mid stream at the bottom of Rock Pool. The trout was 8”, the salmon , a bright silver cock fish about 39” , measured against my salmon rod.

First day out this season. River 0.82m steady and clear. Weather (too) beautiful and beat looking fantastic as usual. Spent a few hours disturbing the usual lies with the 15 footer but no sign of salmo salar. Common sense eventually prevailed and then spent a couple of very enjoyable hours trying to entice the local trout population. Grannom hatched in variable quantities from 10 till 3 but few fish rising. Only the occasional L.D.O. seen and no March Browns . Had a very feisty 8 oz brownie on a Grannom pupa and two other pulls. Then retired to a certain fishing tackle shop for a cup of tea. A hugely enjoyable day.

Oxford Ice Fishers visit the Usk on opening day - 1 Brown trout caught by J Rossiter of Oxford. River rising after constant light rain turning to heavy around 2pm. The fishing hut came in very handy in the rain as did the Chainbridge Inn opposite.
Special thanks to the beat owner who rang to offer advice on the beat and river, a nice touch, thank you.

No salmon caught today, river needs rain. Hottest day for October for some time I suspect. Stayed at little otter cottage which is bank side on this beat and very nice too
