Saw my first Egret! Good river conditions without the forecast rain but for some reason the fish were conspicuous by their absence. The same could not be said, unfortunately, for the deluge of muppets in canoes. Those in green Wye Valley Boats seemed to know the etiquette and passed on the far side but the rest did not and I spent much of the day trying to sink the lines below boats that were 10 yards in front of me. Twice I got completely taken out, one boat crashed into the bank under my rod tip, another had loud music blaring (Roy Orbison!) and some of the comments and conversations were unbelieveable - a mother explained to her teenage daughter that "we go to the 'end of the river' and then phone them to pick us up" - I glanced down from the Severn Bridge on my way home but there was no sign of them in the Bristol Channel. Note to self - essential kit for next trip to include a Hi-Viz onesey so I can be seen from more than 10 yards away, a loudhailer and a 12-bore for those that are both blind and deaf.

See you again after the summer holidays.

On a serious note, new anglers to the river might well be put off by a similar experience even though the canoes are only passing between 10.00 and 15.00. Tagging on the website those beats that see the most summer holiday traffic might be a good idea.

Good day for my fishing companion J Green: 4 barbel to just under 7 lbs and 1 1/2 lbs eel. A couple of good fish lost. Not many anglers on this beat lately and overgrown approaches to swims and swims themselves needed negotiating to enable safe fishing.

A lovely day on the Wye, although the fish weren't exactly climbing up the line as in recent reports! Three of the barbel were around the 1lb mark, which is a good sign for the future. I ended the day catching a new PB chub and losing what felt like a large barbel, but went home happy and can't wait to fish the Wye again.
