Fishing:Trout (River)

Fished the bottom end of the beat. Overcast day with showers. The river was running very clear. Managed to land 4 brown trout on nymphs (PTN & Black Magic), ranging in size: 18, 27, 30 to 45 cm. Started using the duo technique and switched to contact nymphing after lunch. I hauled the big one out of a very narrow (1m wide), deep channel in the middle of the river bed just above the waterfall. Estimate that one to be around 2.5Ibs and it took some landing - absolutely stunning fish. I certainly don't catch them like that very often. (It was returned).
This is a beautiful, secluded stretch of the Usk. I was expecting to see more fish as each pool looks very fishy indeed. But the water is super clear and perhaps I spooked them or perhaps I'm not quite adequate for the task! The fish are certainly there and they fight hard whatever their size. Thanks to the WUF for making fishing like this available to us all.

a tragedy, the river is getting more and more overgrown every year, and the fish are getting worse. the creel is running out and paying almost £30 is pointless

River was a bit low but we still managed 50+ Chub with at least 20 in the 2 lb to 3.5 lb bracket and one Eel. Most were caught Wading Trotting Stick and Waggler on Banded Pellets and a couple Swimfeeder, Straight Lead and (Bouncing Luncheon Meat down River). One large ! fish lost would speculate a Barbel. A very enjoyable day. Would recommend this stretch.

Note a couple of Pegs are slightly steep as can be expected often on the Wye and if it gets wet can be slippery getting in and out river so be prepared, just in case.

First visit to this stretch of the wye, a low fast section but perfect for trotting a float.
All fish caught using either banded pellet or meat.
Barbel to 4lb
Chub to 5lb+
Brilliant day with no stop action as long as I kept the feed going in.

With water levels lower than our previous visit swim choice was limited. Didn’t see the otters this time, but a 15lb salmon lay on the rocks of the second wier.
The canoes were a bit of a nuisance for an hour around 3.30, particularly one that was playing loud music, this spoils the experience for everyone including the wildlife. Why do the canoe companies allow this?
