A short morning session produced the quality fishing this beat is known for. All caught contact nymphing before the gusty wind kicked in at noon. Best Grayling 17” and Trout 16”, lost a brute of a trout after a short and dramatic fight at the head of one of the pools.

After wasting approximately 2 hours of the morning attempting to contact the bailiff and trying to find a stretch of water that both myself and my wife would consider accessible i.e. not completey overgrown with nettles, brambles etc. or a long walk we settled on a stretch of beat 3 left bank. Caught two Chub around the 2lb mark on bread flake, the first on a float (long trotting) and the 2nd on ledger. This stretch is quite shallow at the moment so I was unable to find any Barbel.

Another great day, but very slow due to weather /river conditions last couple of days. Few if any fish rising. Hard work to catch the ones we caught. Saw the barbels and had a go with the fly. Very nice fish! Measured 70 cm , given great care returning to water, but had to take a picture. Swam away strongly.

Slightly cooler day, river as low as I have seen it, fished the faster water at the top end of the beat and the middle section later in the day. Started on feed tack ticks and moved on to trotting using meat and sweetcorn caught 40 plus chub around 20 each most in the 1/2 lb to 2 lb size with 3 slightly bigger ones up to 3 lb The only barbel seen appeared to be spawning.
Given the conditions happy with our returns. A very pleasant day thank you.

40 Chub
