A glorious day to be out anywhere let alone on the banks of the Wye and with a 9 degree air and 7.7 degree water temperature my expectations were high, although the water was crystal clear.
A blank hour halfway down the straight meant a move to the bend where I had 4 good chub on the stick with hemp and maggot. Two short sessions on the feeder in swims below produced nothing so I moved back up to the last swim on the straight. Just as I'd returned chub number 5 caught on the feeder Colin the ghillie turned up. I had number 6 whilst chatting to him and he advised trying the steps to end the day. I pulled out of another good chub after he'd gone and nearly didn't move but it did look more barbely where he suggested so I trusted his judgement. Good job as half hour later I had a rattly drop back on maggot feeder and managed to hang onto a 6lb barbel to end a lovely February day on the river.

Bites were hard to come by thanks to the un-forecast bright conditions. Pellet feeder tactics with a longer than usual hook length came good in the end, with two decent Chub and a Barbel of around 5lb. River was up slightly, but well within normal winter levels.

Top half of the stretch has several swims with good access, but there was a large bonfire/waste pile next to the parking area that looks to be from the farm. The bottom half is much more wild, with somewhat limited access and some sketchy looking swims.

River was very clear which combined with sunny intervals during the day made the fishing slow. Most fish were caught on bread but were hold up close to snags as you'd expect. Boilies and meat did catch fish but trotted bread flake over liquidised bread out performed static approaches. Best chub was 5lb 3oz caught first thing on trotted bread flake.

Incredibly two of the grayling were over 2lbs! The first went 2lb 5oz and a new PB and the second went 2lb on the dot. A wonderful days fishing and two very memorable catches. That's my third 2lb grayling from here this winter, fantastic fishing!

Last minute booking. Stunning weather. Managed 4 barbel and 4 chub on maggots. There doesn’t seem to be the usual amount of chub as previous years. Still a pleasure to be on the Wye.

Weather was very mild for this time of year, with very little wind. We started on float and persevered until 1pm, the only bite was a trout that acrobatically threw the hook.

Then my fishing partner tried a maggot feeder with instant success, from then on it was pretty regular bites from the chub.

I did try the float over the fish again to see if I could tempt them but they, didn't seem interested in a moving bait.

The surprise barbel came just as the sun hit the horizon.

Invited by my old friend Dave Manning to try a day trotting for grayling. I hadn't tried the method for over 15 years but had recently picked up an old Bruce and Walker 12 ft float rod for a song on ebay so was keen to try it out. Most enjoyable day on the picturesque Lypole beat with the water at a lovely height and colour. Dave managed 16 grayling and 7 oos trout, with 14 grayling and 6 trout for me, trotting maggots. Grayling full spectrum size, from a 4" fingerling to about 1.5lbs. Great day. Will return with a fly rod in the trout season.
