After last week's heavy rain it was always a bit of a race to see if the river would be at a fishable height by Good Friday. The Ross gauge was at 1.22 when I arrived at the river and, it turned out, this was still about 50cm too high, especially for the fly. I fished the lower half of the beat for 2-3 hours but the problem was as much the fact that the convenient walkway was still submerged which made footing insecure and progress difficult. By midday, I decided to drive up to Skenfrith to check out the Monnow...

Having escaped the Wye at Goodrich (still a touch too high for safe and effective fishing with the fly it turned out), I arrived at the Skenfrith beat of my childhood to see whether I could salvage the day. The Monnow was also higher than ideal but clearing. There was a heavy hatch of mainly caddis in the Easter sunshine but I didn't see a single rise. I fished nymphs in the slightly coloured water and despite several missed takes, I didn't wet my net. An absolutely beautiful day in the Monnow Valley though. Sunshine, gambolling lambs and the beautiful Monnow at Skenfrith. Perfect.

A bright day with a warm sun and the gauge reading 1’. There was a good-ish but short hatch around 3pm which provided our sport - to the march brown dry although the fish were also taking LDO.
It went quiet around 330pm with a few fish sipping spinners - for which we accounted two fish with a red spinner - an old but reliable pattern when things are proving to be tricky
