Tough day, temperature was forecast to be good which it was, but once the sun shone I stopped getting bites…… water was very clear, I’d hoped there maybe a little more colour in it but no. Just the single chub to just over 4lb which was a nice fish…. Caught on homemade cheese paste.

Fishing:Winter Grayling

3 x grayling 5-15 inches, trotting. The river was by now very low and clear with a bright sun today. Darned hard work for a small return.

Fished bottom and upper middle beats (bottom fence to top of field) using weighted nymphs on a Euro rig and also casting a floating line with Spiders and a weighted Red Tag. Fished from 09:00 to 15:00 on and off but failed to catch. Maybe I'm doing something wrong! Morning was cold but afternoon was beautiful light and sun.

Gauge at about 10 inches and river very clear. Although much warmer than last month, still a brisk 2-3 C on arrival, a lovely sunny day though.
Mainly nymphing switching to a team of flies around 1pm, fished the length of this great beat but no sign of fish, ever hopeful that by the time it reached noon and noticeably warmer, things might change.
Had a nice chat with fellow fisher on the beat who like me, had no luck, despite trying both nymphs and flies.
Hard not to enjoy a day out at Abernant, hopeful that the warmer weather will bring more activity - from the reports on other beats over the last week, everyone seems to have struggled to find the fish.

A very pleasant day on the Lugg, although I lost count of the number grayling caught.
The river was low and very clear, subsequently the fish had spread out more. This time I had to do a lot more walking to keep catching, but it was a very nice mild day and it was great to be out.
The largest grayling weighed in at 1lb 12oz, and another at 1lb 10oz that we've caught twice before (it has an obvious injury).
As for the trout they were back to around the 8-10oz mark, no idea where the larger specimens have got to.

the day started badly 3" tip of a 6ft rod broken off no idea how as i could not find it casting was a bit difficult but needs must , the river is a really nice depth but very clear , overhanging trees , bramble banks and the obligatory barbed wire are a fly fishers nightmare but i think on the right day this beat would be fantastic , but i never saw a fish or even had a tug , was using gold bead pheasant tails and grhe , but will be going back later in he year as it just looks to good not to have any fish there,
