Very windy. No fly on water. The padlock on the second gate does not work limiting access to the town end of the beat - needs a new lock.

Beautiful venue and easy to access. Heavy rain all morning gave way to sunshine after a clearing-up shower. Loads of insect life coming off, including a few mayflies, but didn’t see a rise. Tried wets and nymphs to no avail, but hooked up in the trees several times..

This beat should come with a warning for salmon fly fishing. It is almost wholly inaccessible for fly fishing with very steep banks and it is heavily wooded. I took a friend to practice his spey casting ahead of a trip to Scotland. I thought we were on a perfect beat with advertised 2.5 miles of double bank fishing. There was literally nowhere on the left bank that you could fish and only a tiny bit on the right bank. This should not be marketed as fly water. Also the directions provided were out of date and confusing. Not up to the usual passport standard.

WUF Note: the top mile of the beat is a sequence of excellent fly water, but you need to cross the river and fish the majority of the pools from the right bank. The run of pools; Slaughter crib, Slaughter pool, Botchers rock, Upper and lower Camp, Oak crib and the Biblings swing a fly almost the whole way, but are fished from the right bank wading down beyond the bankside willows. From the left bank, it would have been limited at these low flows. the fly pools of Cobbs cross, Cement rock and Salmon rock would have benefitted from a few inches more water, but would have been fishable with a worked fly. The middle of the beat is deep and slow, but below Martins pools, there are 2 nice runs either side of the lsland and a productive cast just below the Island.

We have checked the directions with the owner. They are fully up to date and accurate.

Much needed torrential rain in the morning followed by strong wind in the afternoon made for a tough and fruitless day. Beautiful beat though, plenty of variety and easy access. Will try again in better conditions.

Went down late afternoon after the rain stopped. Water was coloured - not quite a wash off though. Good to see the river level had come up. The fish were celebrating elsewhere..
