A blank day. Fished various dries, terrestrials, over the mid day period. Never mind, wonderful weather for the time of year!

A magical days fishing on a beautiful secluded beat. Lovely autumn day, sunny with occasional heavy showers in the afternoon. Fish started rising around mid day. A lot of fly life and a naturalist paradise. Kingfisher, yellow and grey wagtails, dipper, little owl, tawny owl and many more, nuthatch etc. Water gin clear and a lot of fish in this beat. Lovely varied water with swift flowing runs and long glides excellent for dry fly. Caught two trout one 10 inches the other about 2 pounds. Both fish beautifully marked in perfect conditions. Excellent day out, and the fishing was good too! Cannot wait to fish this next spring!

CP and BS from London fished the beat from 10.00am to 12.00pm. Steady rain, cool and cloudy building up to hard rain. River level good; few fish seen. Began at the bridge/parking, and fished up river. No fish caught. Section was mostly shallow riffle, occasional deep pool, large woody debris consistently found along the entire beat.

A poor start to the day at Titley Bridge, unable to fish more than a few yards due to fallen tree with no way round. Attempted to re enter water further upstream but overgrowth too thick to penetrate. Restarted further down stream, greatly improved. Two trout caught, both rising fish 7in and 12 in. Water very low. An enjoyable days fishing.

I know the upper Arrow quite well but this was my first experience of Whittern. A first always presents challenges and on this occasion they were exacerbated by a continuous, strong downstream wind.

Throughout the afternoon there was a significant and prolonged Mayfly hatch. I watched as they bounced vulnerably on the water expecting the trout to latch onto them but it simply didn't happen. Only once did I encounter a fish picking them off but he was close to a shaded bank protected by low hanging vegetation as well as that annoying wind. I tried but failed.

When all my other tactics for bringing fish to the surface came to naught I resorted to trundling a heavy nymph through some of the deeper runs. This produced two (11-12") beautiful trout. Nice fish but I was left feeling rather frustrated. I'd failed to make the best of a day that seemed full of promise - I guess that's part of the enduring challenge and why we love the sport. "I'll be back!"

Beaten again by the wind on the Arrow. A few fish rising between the bridges as I arrived at 3pm and one WBT 9" to hand on a mayfly pattern. Increasing wind seemed to put the fish down and all very quiet at 7:30 and didn't feel like a late rise was on the cards so called it a day.
